A good time for checking out new land is an early morning walk, first light.. Ask the owner of the land where they see the most rabbits ect, they also would know if their is any other stuff on the land and where it would be, if their is fresh kickout around the earths/warrens look for possible tracks, hairs, and as others have said Smell is a good sign as to whats using an earth... Also dont worry about making the odd cock up, we`ve all done it.. just dont write about it on the net.. cos someone is bound to start ranting on about it.. the best education you can get is out their in the field "doing it" and learn from your mistakes... I had no one to teach me either, it was just me age twelve and a jack russell that my old man bought from a pet shop, learning together.. And 30 blaaaah years later i`me still learning, which is the beauty of our pastime each new day brings a new challenge and something new to learn.. Yis Mars..

Yis Mars.. thanks for your reply . un fortunatly the owner does not even visit the land .its just grazing land occaisionly used for horses . it is quite a large area though including 2 natural pools with double figure carp and a wood . the downside is it is bordered by the motorway and i fear most of the rabbits reside in the embankment which is obviously fenced off . i will take a look later with the lamp . theres loads of grey squirrels though which i assume no one on here will mind me shooting? i do realise the importance of head(kill)shots to avoid wounded animals limping around . roystoncrankted 1
as a relative newcomer to hunting and just been given permission to shoot , ferret, trap on a piece of land near me i went for a mooch this morning . although i know there were rabbits there a few years back there doesnt seem to be any evidence now . are rabbits likely to be out and about this time of year or are they mostly underground ? is there a best time to see them , i was going to have a look later on with my lamp . also found what i thought were fox holes in some large mounds of earth ,there were 3 seperate locations with 2 entrances/exits in each . the size of the holes are approx 7-8 inchs in diameter . any ideas ? didnt want to start throwing my dogs down ther in case it was a badger set . ya shouldnt be mooching about anywhere wi dogs until ya find out the diff between fox rabbit and badgers sets in my eyes could end up a costly mistake just my opinion
