me ferret got a lump on the lower side of his jaw

me ferret has got a lump the size of marble on the right side of his lower jaw, he has been to the vets twice with this and recieved antibiotics, the first time the lump went down no its back although he dosent seem as ill as he was last time, lymphoma has been mentioned but we have to wait to see if these AB'S work.

i was just wondering if anyone has had a ferret dye from lymphoma what i need to look out for.

hes not off his food and seems lively enough, he has no dihrroea or sickness and is really good natured.

what i am trying to get at is do ferrets get lumps often can they come and go, is my vet any good, i ask the last question because i am new to keeping ferrets and i am sure that there are poeple on this site that will be able to give me sound advice and experiance is sometimes better than qualifacations.

well he probably knows more than you and us on your ferts condition, but good on you for getting him to a vet, was he only getting antibiotics as the treatment, what were they charging you per visit, is he still on AB's

If its an abcess then giving antibiotics will not sort it, it wants lancing

This is some Lymphoma info , but the vet will need to confirm

 

Lymphoma or Lymphosarcoma is the most common type of cancer in ferrets. Often, there are very few early symptoms of this disease. Some possible symptoms could be weakness, diarrhea, weight loss and swollen lymph nodes. Your ferret may also experience difficulty breathing or develop a cough. A complete blood work up and examination by your veterinarian is really the only definitive way to properly diagnose this disease. It usually strikes ferrets who are four years of age or older, however there is also a form of this cancer that strikes young ferrets as well.

 

Treatment is usually chemotherapy and it is sometimes successful in putting the cancer into remission for six months to a year or more. However, this treatment is usually not curative. Unfortunately, due to vague early warning signs, the cancer may be at an advanced stage or will have spread to other organs by the time it is diagnosed. In this case you can discuss with your veterinarian measures that can be taken to make your ferret's remaining time more comfortable.

 

To help catch this devastating disease at an early stage, have your ferret examined by your veterinarian at least once a year. Ask to have complete blood work drawn periodically, especially if your ferret has been ill or "out of sorts." Early detection is the best way to give your ferret a chance for treatment and remission.

thanks Sue, Stubby, and Kay, its not an abcess as its solid and the fert is in no pain at all, the vet took bloods the first time and said it looked like an infection of some sort, i guess well have to wait and see give it time and all that, Stubby so far the bill is up to £109.00 thats two visits, one on a saturday, two lots of AB'S two check ups (no weight loss) and blood tests so in all i dont think i am getting overcharged to much

£109.00 for 2 visits i think your being ripped off the last time my ferret had a lump the vet gave my ferret a x ray there and then and found a small bit of bone had gone down the side of its gum so as the ferret was put out for the x ray the vet removed the bone there and then gave it a shot of A/bs and that was that it cost me £78.00 total. The vet did say it happens quit offten with ferrets as they eat so much dead food .
