runforyourlife 361
Was down in fox valley yesterday, a very very lonely remote place. Never come across anyone else there before. Wind is always blowing, and yesterday with the wind chill factor it was minus 6.. My colliex springs mr charles out of the rough, and down the hill towards me!! My salukix clocks this and is off from the other side of the valley where she was hunting up. Next thing i couldnt beleive what i wittnessed! 4 foot fence barb wire(easy jump at pace for her, she jumps 6ft no probs). Hits it full on at about 3 feet up the fence. It flips her over the fence and lands on her back! Her fur was floating everything!! To say i shit myself was an understatement, as the force she hit the fence was frightening! As i arrived at her, she was just lay there giving me her paw! She had winded her self and for a minute or 2 couldnt breath, very scarey! I then set about looking for the big cuts and rips she should have sustained from the wire... 1 graze down her front leg!!! 1 piercing in her chest, with 2, 7" scratches down her chest, yes thats all they were, scratches!! couldnt believe it! She stood up, and limped for a few minutes. Then she was at full flight again!! She was the luckiest dog out there yesterday! I really thought she had had it.... And i am just chuffed that some how she has got 50 stitches in her.... I should imagine she will be sore today, so she'll be staying at home today.... fox valley... JPTfellterrier 65
did she cut herself? no were near as bad but my lurcher ran full pelt in to my terrier and the terrier did a flip and started acting all dizzy and stumbeling over i ran over and picked her up thinking it was seriouse........just before i got to her my other terrier ran up to her and bit her and she was then fine and procceded to run after the terrier that bit her Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
Yes sorry, have edited it, and added a few pics, she was lucky as feck! Quote Link to post
JPTfellterrier 65
defonatly, that stuff is horrible stuff, we dont tend to have much barbed wire round here but there are a couple with it at the bottom of the fence but the terriers usually avoid those fences Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
we have it everywhere fellterrier, thats why our dogs must learn to jump, or it will be at there own peril! Quote Link to post
JPTfellterrier 65
yep the worst thing is when there is a role on the floor, which is common round here, or the wire has come off the fence and just been left on the floor(i always move it).......been so close a few times with the terriers and the lurcher Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
There's a place not far from me where they've put razor wire round the bottom of an 8' fence, along the ground Walk 20 meters down the fence line, and there's an entire section of fencing gone - an elephant could walk through. What's the point in putting razor wire round one little part of the fence, and especially along the ground? I reckon there's some sick buggers out there who just do it for a laugh. Nice looking spot there RFYL Quote Link to post

Bootsha 1,306
Glad to hear your dogs gonna be ok mate, how lucky you are, listen to this yarn, Sunday before christmas went out for a dig complete with lurcher, approaching our first spot , the dog jumped a fence, only it was a double fence, just starting off from a straining post so going out at an angle. The dog wasn't coursing anything, just jumped a bog standard fence, only landed on the barb on the other side and was hung up, I ran over to him and lifted him off (not an easy task with a caught up bull cross), but off he came, I noticed something under him and thought it might have been a flap of skin, I caught him up and had a look, I have never, in all my years with lurchers or terriers seen anything like , he must have cut his femural artery, there was a stream of blood about the width of your finger pouring, and I mean pouring out of him, like a hose pipe running. I immedeately applied pressure to the wound by gripping it in my fist and imobilising the dog, If I could only stem the bleeding I thought and get him to the vehicle and then the vet. As hard as I tried the blood kept pouring out between my fingers and I knew it was all up on my mate, within five minutes he was dead, bled to death, a beautifull bull cross, in his prime, I bred him, I owned and worked his parents , I trained him, He'd stop anything in its tracks that he was asked to do, yet bring a rabbitt back live to hand, fantastic with the kids and everything else. I buried him there. I dont know if I'm getting sentimental as I get older but I dont mind admitting it broke my heart. Who said lurcher and terrier men are "'ard as nails". I wasn't going to write anything about it to be honest but now i'm glad I have. Good luck to you all and have a happy new year. One thing I keep telling myself is, "You cant wrap working dogs up in cotton wool", but boy is he missed. Be lucky. Quote Link to post
