Ferreting today

Recommended Posts

Went out on a invite for a bit of ferreting today with a few mates and my son and his lurcher pup so it was a good as an excuse to take the young ferrets out and try out my new xmas present a mrk 3 locator aswell now iv used the old type for years and got on well with them so i was keen to see how good the new ones are .The first set we went to was a 8 holer so we netted up and put one of the young ferrets in he showed at every hole mucking about coming back out at every chance he had but as hes new to this we spent time with him and he then cottened on to it and went down like a rocket after about 5 mins he bolted his first rabbit to the net ,he popped his head out and went straight back down he never showed for about 10 mins so i turned on the new mrk 3 and gave it to my boy and said you had better learn how to use this ,well hes seen me use the old type so within seconds he had the ferret located at 2 foot so a few spade fulls later we pulled out a very dead rabbit with a ferret clamped on to its neck we popped that ferret back in the box and put the other young one down just to run the set though well he went straight down showed at every hole and then came out the hole we had just dug so we put him back in the box and picked up all the nets and moved on to the next set .This set was only a 5 holer so we put the nets down and put the first young one back in he knew his job this time and went straight down within 2 mins we had our first bolter from a small pop hole inside a tree stump that we had all missed so it never had a net over it but this gave the young lurcher a good run for it money and it made it to the next set down we waited about 3 or 4 mins and we had number 3 in the net closley followed by the ferret we popped him back down he showed about 3 mins lated so we called it a day on this set as we knew we had a least one rabbit at home in the next set as it was the one that got away .This set was only 3 holes so i said pop in the other ferret and only net 2 holes and give the dog a chance at another run so in went the young polecat showed straight away at the other netted hole and went straight back down we waited for about 5 mins and gave the set a once over with the mrk 3 locator on search but we had nowt on the box so we went up and down the hedge row with the box but still nowt so we started sweeping the field getting further and futher out when the box started bleeping this little 3 hole set went out in to the field about 12 feet with no holes anywhere we put the locator on find and pin pointed it so out came the spade again we dug down 18" to a very dead rabbit in a block end with the polecat stuck in front of it so we lifted them out and back filled the hole and decided to call it a day with 4 rabbits in the bag .The two young ferrets did well for there first outing and the young lurcher learnt abit more about working with the ferrets but the mrk 3 will be in my pocket from now on but i will have to invest in another collar so on some of the big sets i can run more then one ferret at a time .I cant wait for my next invite out now im back in to the hunting again ,

I will try and put some photos up as soon as i can work out how to make them smaller ???

They do cost alot but when you add up the time and ferrets you save its not that bad and if they last as long as my old mrk 1 did i will be more then happy .When i think back to when i first started ferreting it was with jills only and a big hob just in case of any lay ups under ground we never had locators then just good working ferrets and a lot of crossed fingers we never lost our best ferrets......
