Fen dog

In my opinion on this topic, i would say yes there are lamping dogs that will kill fen hares and some that wont. But if you were into fen coursing what breed would you get for the job? I think most people would say a saluki X as thats what they are best at.

Sam as if you wanted a dog for lamping small fields what breed would you get?? proberly and whippet/greyhound cross, even though some salukis will be good lamping dogs they are not best sutied to the job.

I could go on forever, if your a shotting person and you want a dog to retrive phesants, what breed would you get? proberly a lab or spainal as they are best for that job even though some lurcher are good retriveres they arnt best sutied for the job.

So what i am saying is people get the breed of dog thats best sutied obviosly they wont all be good at the job but thats how it goes.

Thanks

fair play your some character you are you constantly start threads slagging of saluki crosses then when your called out you wriggle out every time like i say your rabbiting dogs will jack on big land at this time of year full stop you wont accept that because like your mates youve never coursed good hares on big land at this time of year. but if your still convinced you dogs are the real deal against a saluki cross or a pure i can soon arrange a match for you for any money you want but some how i dont think your going to accept are you

Just incase no one has read it, on another thread someone has stated that only a Saluki Cross will catch a Hare on the Fens in the Months of January and Febuary. I say that is a load of old tosh but since I don't own a Saluki, can't comment on it!!! Go figure!!! Anyhow, I have asked the guys in question that have argued with me over the matter to nail their colours to the mask and actiually say they are agreeing with the statement OR are you going to bite the bullet and agree with little old me!!! :drinks:

Over to you guys..........

once again a thread that ends up as bollox, come on lets beg to differ, horses for courses and get back to the good stuff. Cheers.

i was the bloke that said it firstly i aint argued with you secondly you aint asked me to nail any colours whatever that means to any mast . you have obviously not done a lot of coursing because if you had you wouldnt be spouting all this bollox all the time about salukis and saluki type hybryds that you do . you have no idea what your talking about i will repeat again if your dog has no saluki blood in it it will not kill hares at this time of year on big land ok it might kill the odd one but no more and if youve got a fast dog well i say youve got a potential jacker on your hands if you venture on to the fen now because your fen hare loves the fast uns this time of year. probably your going to try and make light of this statement and laugh but this will further show your inexperience on winter coursing. you obviously dont know the difference in a hare from stubble time through early november and then the difference in that hare january and february time and if that dog that kills em early days doesnt have saluki blood in it its blown away january february time. something to chew over in the meantime is if you do think the saluki is such a no no i can at any time arrange for you to run one of your lurchers which doesnt possess this dreaded saluki blood to run against a pure saluki on big land for any amount of money you want. you have consistantly put up threads slating fen dogs coursing men and saluki bred lurchers my response is this run your dogs which dont possess saluki blood on any fen now and they will get away with one run run em twice or three times and they will jack end of i dont care how many rabbits they can catch on the lamp or how many hares they can run on the lamp run em on the fen at any time over the next six weeks and they will jack

well said mate been reading two many plumer books

Guest night time my time

i live round the fenns, there are other dogs that will catch up here but brookie is right, they may get one or two but you will blow your or casue your dog to jack if you try keep up with the big winded saluki dogs.they have been the fen dogs since the 70s, match results over the years prove this, see you in the near future for a practice.the ground lays wet and heavey at the mo,you will need fit dogs with a lot of wind ;)

my mate had a half bred bull x that used to catch hares for the fun of it so u cant just say that salukis are the only dogs witch can catch hares

I would say thats probably a "one off" as I have never seen a bull x which was a decent, consistent hare dog. What time of year was the dog catching them and was it during the daytime? Some of the bull/saluki/grey mixes do ok, but they dont usually have a lot of bull in them, just enough to give them that grit and stamina, very unusual to hear of a straight half x bull/greyhound that kills hares regularly daytime :o
