Big bald beautiful 1,231
Had my whippet bitch out tonight for only the second time on the lamp. i tried a spot i havnt lamped in 7 yrs, it was lifting with rabbits and i even got two sitters...but the bitch wasnt playing ball she just wanted to walk as close to me as possible my two whippets are like chalk and cheese , the dog picks things up a lot quicker and was keener to be hunting. the bitch is a lot more laid back. It was still nice to be out and i got a half hearted run from the bitch as i walked back to the carpark with her off the lead. still early days as she isnt a yr old until 3rd of january it was also nice to see rabbits in numbers, must have counted 35 on the small 9 hole golf course. I can only speak from my own experience, which isnt vast, but unless you have got a lot of easy catches to put in front of a young un all you will do is end up getting the young un frustrated. Then it will normally start yapping or f*****g off and huntin up. Which isnt good and makes you look not so good either, lol. Take your time and you will be telling your mates how to do it in a few seasons time Quote Link to post
dankay123 33
i have had started all my dogs young. 16 weeks and off to the field. jumping, following on etc get it used to live stock at this age its much easier than bringing a year old dog that thinks everything that moves he has to chase. 5-6mths old a couple of dropped bunnies 6-9 mths dropped bunnies and start ferreting training.net up everything apart from 1 hole and the will soon learn the crack. the pup already knows what bunnies are about and is oozzing confidence as it has had all those dropped rabbits 9-12mths old lamping can be started (i only do a little lamping so i just start them on the lamp once they are getting consistent results i knock the lamping on the head) 12-18mths start on hares (which is alli do!!) once a week is all i take my dog out actually hunting. i walk them every evening but only work 1 day per week with 1 night of lamping(whilst training) i dont hammer them as they are young and physically cannot take it. its common sense. dont give a pup 20 hard runs a night. 1 dead cert is worth 100 missed bunnies im not saying its the right way but ive had no problems. fraggle 4
these people who say run it at 3 months how the feck is beyond me, my pup is hitting just over 5 months, and is not interesd at all, i take her out ferreting and lamping with my mates and she just wants to sit by my side or follow close to me. she chases things yes but not to the point she wants to leg it round the whole field. i just cant see how they want to run so young. my pup will not even see a squatter properly till she is 7 months and that is when the lamping beguins. but as this is my first dog i am probelry wrong, but i just want to make sure she has had a good puppy hood first.
