What round to use 223

Recommended Posts

All rifles are different.

I'm afraid its going to be a case of buying as many different brands and grains as you can and see which group the best.

Hornady, Remington, Federal, PRVI, Winchester etc etc are all good brands and offer, between them, 40 to 60+ grains.

Have some fun finding out

SS

I'm going to the range on Sunday with about 7 different types and brands of ammo to try out off the bench - 5 shot groups.

As all the rounds are copper can you just change ammo/brand without "shooting in" between a change over of ammo so to speak???

Just to see what groups the best.

At the moment it looks to be Rem UMC 50g JHP and Hornaday 53gr HP match that group the best in my CZ Varmint 223 with a 1 in 9 twist.

If we assume you are after a guide and not talking World Championship levels then just keep shooting......as long as you are on the board, no need to adjust the scope either, just keep the point of aim constant for each type and check group sizes! Sounds like a good clean afterwards will be in order!

just looking at getting a howa 1500 tomorrow and have scrolled throu the site to fine comments on different makes and grain to use and keep falling at the first so if you either have/had/ or know of a consistent round/grain i would much appreciate. cheers ss

It will definately be down to trying a few, all manufacturers/all barrels/all twists, just seem to like or dislike some stuff!!

Make them go bang Clive ;) Give your barrel time between shots, and extra time between groups though.

Ive just recently bought a howa 1500 stainless, my gunshop only had limited .223 ammunition at the time, from what I bought, the Remington premier Accutip were the best 55gr, I've shot very good groups at 150m with this ammo; Im not saying these are the best of all ammunition available, just my preference, like others have said just try a variety of makes and weights! :D
