bootneck 0
I had a chat with my local FAO the other day. He knows next year i'm going to apply for my FAC with a view to using it on pigeon, Rabbit, the odd duck and fox. With that his views were that the .178 HMR would be suitable for all the above types and the 22/250 would only be suitable for Fox and not the other smaller types. Before I take matters further in terms of testing vaious calibers i'd be grateful for any advice or experiences. with either of those mentioned. Thanks Bootneck Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Ahm, couple of things. It's a 17HMR and I could be mistaken but I don't think you're allowed shoot ducks with rifles? Other than that yes they're fine choices, the HMR for safely landed pigeons and rabbits and the .22-250 for Mr. Charles. Quote Link to post
bootneck 0
If it mainly pigeons and corvids then the .17. The .22-250 will be much better suited to fox, but overkill for rabbits and the like. Ideally you could do with both, and then youre covered for vermin and fox, as the HMR is not a ideal foxing calibre as shots have to be perfect, no room for error, and range is much less than the centrefire cals. A .223 would allow you to shoot both if you headshot rabbits......... dixyhmr Could explain the reasoning behind your comment about head shot for rabitts? I'm presuming if the .223 will do foxs its more than capable for rabbits and alike so why a head shot? Thanks Edited December 26, 2008 by bootneck Quote Link to post

Thanks John, as for ducks you are probably correct, it was just my thoughts, no knoledge behind it so i'll defer to your advice. Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
You could shoot Ducks if your FAC said so, but thats pretty well unheard of. .223 for Fox and headshooting Rabbits .17 HMR for the Corvids. Job Done. SS Quote Link to post

jamie g 17
hmr perfect for what you want as for the 223 or 22/250 for fox then you wont go wrong wrong both super caliber rifles for sure. i have vermin on my 22/250 as well as fox and i take the odd rabbit with 22/250 but to be fair even if you shoot it in the head it makes to much mess. and if you do it often it will cost to much in ammo imo its a waste of a round to use on them if doing it all the time Quote Link to post
