Knocked snares

Recommended Posts

Been out the last 3 days mixed snaring and ferreting, i snare round an oil field that has chain link fence and the rabbits have dug under the fence just enough to get through, i have had a certain amount if sucess wiring the snares to the fence but i'm getting a few knocked wires . How would you set the snares ? with the bottom of the wire touching the ground or off the ground bearing in mind the gap is only big enough for the rabbit to get through.

Ensure the snares are set at the right angle for the rabbits entry and exit under the fence, this will help prevent knocks also allow enough for the feet to pass under, if you set too low you wll still catch although probably around chest. Also make sure you have a nice pear shape on the snare this will allow smoother running and a larger horizontal kill area.. Make the fence opening larger so you have a bigger kill area too, pull the fence up as required with your hands...

Another point worth mentioning is to set them on the side the rabbits are going to, not the side they are coming from, as the snare can snag on the fence, preventing it from pulling up, probably very obvious.

Thanks for the reply chaps.I can't make the hole larger as its a chain link and i would'nt want to lose the permission through damaging property. Hard to tell which way they're going, different times of the the day different direction.
