My answers to your questions would be.... NO..... YES..... NO ; but what has this got to do with feeding a dog before going out for a night on the lamp ?????

Cheers.

With most if not all of the greyhounds and lurchers i've had over the years they would have "made a pig of themselves" if grub was left infront of them all day, of that I have no doubt.

Not eating before exercise causes cramp and stiches for humans and i have been told it is the same for working dogs.

So if you want the best out of your dog i would feed it a tin of dog food about an hour before it goes out lamping/ferreting.

:icon_eek::wallbash: C,mon mate, you're either comming the c :censored: t or know feck all about dogs. :hmm:

I'll let you tell us which it is. ;)

Is there need to be like that,

Just saying what a old lurcher worker from my village told me, i asked him the same question and he told me to feed them an hour before working with a light food.

Maybe I was a bit harsh whippeter so I apologise. The thing is mate a complete novice might read your post and think "oh that's the way to do it"

The moral of this episode must be don't believe everything you're told, i'm sure we've all been given some dodgy info at one time or another, it's just a case of sorting out the wheat from the chaff. :)

NEVER FEED A DOG JUST PRIOR TO RUNNING IT. This can result in Torsion,a twisted gut, which is very bad news for a dog and not only extremely painful but potentialy fatal.Mine get fed AFTER they have finished lamping.ANYONE DOUBTING THIS SHOULD CONSULT A RUNNING DOG VET.ps , Ive no wish to preach to anyone ,just thinking of dog's welfare.

Running a dog for about an hour ??? LOL !! It takes an hour at least to get to decent lamping ground !! 4 - 6 hours would be about the norm for a decent shine !

Cheers.

Was just about to post the exact same thing mate, take away whether your dog works better or not, on a full stomach a dog running hard might not ever work again, mine get 6-8 hours clear to let food digest before working!!!

How do you guys organise you dogs before a lamping session?? i have been told by some people not to feed the dog the day i go i have heard some people wont feed the dogs for a couple of days before.

look forward to ur replys

regards steve

cant see any sense in not feeding a dog a couple of days before an outing who ever told you that wants his dogs taking off him,

ive missed the odd day to assist dropping a bit of weight leading up to the season.

and a rarely fed a dog on the day i was going lamping unless it was something light scrambled eggs etc, prefering to feed them at night when i got back.

Ours get fed twice a day,...mon/wed/fri they get veg and extra fats as well...other wise its raw meat/bones...if there out in the day, they skip breakfast, if out at night, they skip supper...fed once they have done there job...that with plenty of water...when the chickens are laying well, they will get egg yolks as well, and when the wifes garden is going well, they fairly help themselves!..lol..plus we have apple trees and they pick them and eat 'em aswell...maybe give 'em extra if its been a supper hard day or night, dont feed kibble or canned.

Kye..
