Kye 77
People talk about getting running dogs fit, and battle dogs ready for what they do,...yet the poor little dirt dogs never get a mention!... I get all my dogs in the best shape that i can before they are taken out to do what they are kept for...i agree, nothing will get a digging dog fit, like digging will, and to be 100% "on" a digging dog has to be dug to!...same as with hare coursing dogs etc... BUT,.. To exspect a dog, to go from kennels, to battle (which IS what digging is to the little tykes!) is mad imo,..i am NOT a terrierman...i just keep a few terriers, and they take game for me, and i like my digging, i am NOT an exspert though, but i agree with p***y, a dog should have done summat, other than run around a yard... Good feed, and a warm bed are needed as well, but imo, 4-6 miles walking, maybe 10 minutes of chasing a ball, five minutes on a flirt, or spring poll, will do a terrier the world of good imo!... Im involved with combat type sports, and i have always been in shape, for all but one of my fights!...i am a late starter, or a 'grinder'...the longer the fight goes, the better i get, and ive had a bunch of fights that i have won, when i shouldnt have...even lossing the first 2 or 3 rounds, to pull out the win at the end!...if i was NOT in shape, i wouldnt have been able to do that, that is certain!...i had one fight, a re-match infact, and i only trained for 10 days for it!...i had to take laxatives, and diauretics to even make weight!...pissing and shitting blood, and lossing 14lbs of body weight in the sauna, in three hours is NOT to be recomended!..lol. I went into that fight, and i lost a three round decision, i COULD have won, but i was scared i was gonna gas, so didnt 'let it go',...and i lost for it!... Of course, i know a dog dosnt enter an earth thinking to itself.."I havent trained, so im gonna go steady!"..lol...it will work how it normally works, either going pete-tong, or all out baying, etc....but if no fitness training was had before, it WILL find it harder!...FACT!...its funny, the people who say.."A good terrier should stay till the jobs done!"...they are first to sell, or cull a dog that walks of the job, yet it may have been a good dog if brought on right...and have they ever been made to run on a treadmill until they are puking and shitting everwhere?...or fight until helps arrives, in the dark, against a enemy that outweighs you?...no they havent!... fettler 2
chip, i think every lad digging should do his best to have his dog in top shape for the country.....fitness wont make a dog stay in ground till he is dug.......the breeding behind him makes him do that.......raising a dogs heart beat with exercise will always help a working terrier......just like it does with a boxer....a good fit boxer will quit when ever he wants....just like a good fit dog will quit any time he wants....... a good fit" game "dog that wont quit "deserves " the best of food and the best of exercise, a dog that walked and exercised wont heat up as quick as an unfit dog....... a fit dog is more alert at what is happening around him. totally agree get out and cover a few mile helps muscle tone and cardiovascular rates which must help when they in there graftin Quote Link to post
