chocky14u 4
i agree to comments made about custom fitting a home load to your rifle.......additionally have a look at the trigger pressure on your rifle some rifles have heavy triggers approx 5lb required to release shot, you could be pulling your shot resulting in poor groups. My howa 1500 heavy barrel .243 had a 3 3/4lb factory trigger shooting 1.5 inch groups. Fitted a Timney trigger set to 1 3/4lb shooting sub 1 inch at 100yds all shot with 100gr federal powershok (no bipod)....working on home loads now hope this helps Quote Link to post
mudman 14
An update on my rifle, checked the mounts and rings, some nuts screws needed tightening a little so maybe I had found the cause of my problems. Gave the barrel a good clean and de-copper, I am supposed to be stalking tomorrow so had to take the rifle out to check the grouping this afernoon even though the weather was deteriorating. Fired two unaimed shots into a bank to dirty the barrel then set up a 100 yard range into the same bank but positioned so that the howling gale was blowing directly from behind me to the target so there was no cross wind to worry about. It also started to snow. First two shots four inches too high and a little to the left but near enough touching, followed by the third shot just inside the 2" diameter bull at 10o'clock. Five minutes to cool the barrel and try another three shot group, first shot three inches left, second two inches low, third low and right by about 5 inches!!! Contemplate throwing rifle into a river, but luckily the nearest open water is 10 miles away so I have a walk to think about things. Decide to try without a moderator. My brother turns up to put a couple of check shots through his own rifle, the result is three shots touhing just inside the top edge of the bull, pretty much perfect. So I suggest he try my 'useless rifle' to see how he gets on with it, we leave the mod on. Three shot group of about two inches in size, slightly high and to the left. Slight alteration to the scope and he has his next three shot group smack centre of the bull!!!!! So its me after all!!! And the worse thing is I have not got a clue what I am doing wrong!! No point in getting a new rifle or scope, the only defective element is myself, bit of a loss what to do now Quote Link to post
Paul.L 0
Mudman ,get down the range and start punching paper have a look at your technique ,breathing etc get some one to watch you,to see if your doing any thing obvious wrong ,I have been following this thread from the beginning people are to quick to rubbish the rifle , when in fact its down to pilot error .I would say that there are very very few bad rifles on the market due to the technology nowadays , Tikka /sako among the best rifles available,of course you can get a bad one ,but doesn,t mean there all shit my SAKO 85 is a tack driver 1/2" groups with any premium factory ammo . Do not get disheartened get out there mate and practice ,it will pay of ,don,t forget your looking for a nice tight grouping don,t matter were it is on the target get the grouping ,you can always adjust the scope later all the best Paul Quote Link to post
