brock1 2
i had this problem with the first lurcher i got tryed every thing with it for giveing it ferreted rabbits easy rabbits day & night running it with other dogs but after a year of catching more than the dog my self i had to just face the fact that he just wasnt a worker. had him pts becouse he was a good looking dog & if i give him away some silly person whould of breed from him. now i only get lurchers from pup becouse buying peoples rejects is an expenceif hobbie. hope your mates works out becouse my mate got one just the same but she came good in the end so give her a chance & see what happens but some they just dont have what it takes. Bit extreme...Why not castrate and re-home to a non working home????? How many times has it been out and how many rabbits has it run without picking them up how many times has it been out ferreting and seen ferrets hitting the nets ?????????? would have to know the answer to all these questions before cutting it nuts off or rehoming it. spoke to the lad this morning the dogs run about 50 - 70 rabbits and not picked up its not been out with ferrets or other dogs he got it at 9 mths old from working stuff . hes had it out with his terriers ratting and its killed rats .. the guy whr he got it from says he`ll have it back for a month and see if he can get it going the lads only 14 and wants to try and sort it himself - like he says all part of learning he comes out with us with the terriers but i aint had a lurcher for 30 yr so i`m a bit stuck as to what good advice to give him if all else fails its`ll be a good ratting dog for him - i`ve told him keep it off ratting for a bit and whr out weds with another lad ferriting .. thanks everyone for the advice .. 600 outings 50- 70 rabbits dont sound a lot now like someone said penny will drop .. that is still a pup i whouldnt expect it to pick any thing up apart from ferreted rabbits at that age any way. runing them at that age reagular with out a catch would spoil her. my advice to the lad whould be to get the od live rabbit with the ferrets for her now & agian untill she is about 12 mounth. then start takeing her lamping but only give her easy rabbits ie squaters but make sure she sees then before you slip her. dont over do it on the amount of slips you give her while she is still young. the first year is just for learning then she will show him what she can do the next year. this bitch still has the chance to be a top notch rabbiting dog. not like the the one i had witch was about 3 when i bort it. so tell the lad to take it slow with her make her first few kills easy for her to give her conferdence & let us know how she gets on. but as sead ferreted rabbit will be the best way to give a pup the conferdence to pick up & i mean ferreted then take the rabbit away from its set before you put it down for the pup so the rabbit dosent know where to go for safety becouse it is in a strange enviroment. luke 2
not a good idea putting it on rats first that may be its problem thinking its going to get bit you could try giving it a couple of droppers during the day just to build its confidence up best of luck Quote Link to post
victor 10
i had this problame for a little while, i fixed it when ferreting, we had a rabbit alive and there was this breeding pen or some thing and the walls were made of wire and the rabbit wouldnt be able to get out, so we put it in there and had the dog chase it in there, eventualy he was sick of chasing it for fun and grabed it. then we were walking around to the next burrow arfter he had grabed the rabbit and a squatter jumped out, i sliped cooper straight away and he pinned. then as i was playing fetch i neeled donw and keeped calling him a goos boy untill he brought it back. i knecked it and we carryed on. now he is 100% perfect on rabbit. but if you dont likr the idea of a alive rabbit with no chance discard of this post.. bignoel 14
i would put him in a barn wit a rabbit and cut him loose as stated he would be able to catch easy and no where for the rabbit to go maybe another dog on a lead egging him on might do the trick ? Quote Link to post
the_stig 6,614
just a quick update - between us we put a far bit of work in over the last week a lad took the dog out with the ferrets saw a few bolt into nets . the lads had her retrieving rabbit skins .. today we netted out a couple of fields and she ran doubled up with a saluki cross and had a good rag on a couple that hit the nets .. he`s kept her off the rats and the lamp so all in all a big improvement - i think she`ll make a cracking bitch for the lad ..
