Guest ESS
Had my parrot for 5 years and never any sign of feather plucking.Yesterday we started plucking the turkeys and chickens I come in and couldn't believe my eyes Look what the dozy fker did  . A friend said he saw a cat outside when he come on the wall and the parrot could have seen it But cant see this being a problem as we already have a cat .He has loads of toys and gets plenty fruit .Any idea's please he may be horny..and that is a sensible reply...and has he been checked for mites recently? redmoor 0
Hi, i work with parrots and specialise in their behaviour etc. Keep your parrot dampened down..one of the best things to dissuade plucking is to keep the parrot sprayed down during light hours..dont spray him near to when he would normally begin to roost. You may never find the reason why he began plucking but breaking the 'habit' is the key..use 5mls of Listerine (must be the yellow original one) to 1 litre of hot water...spray him with this and it will help..spray as many times throughout the day as you can..heating the water/listerine mix in the microwave so that the water is hot..as its sprayed it naturally will cool..you dont want blasting him with cold water. Unless your parrot has been outside its highly unlikely to be mites..if you take him to the Vet make sure they dont just stick Ivermectin on him..this seems to be the standard 'treatment' for pluckers..and very, very rarely is it ever mites. If you are going to take him to a vet..make sure its a specially qualified avian vet..otherwise you are just throwing away good money..most small animal vets have no idea about parrots. Here some pics of a parrot we had in recently as a rescue... Before... After 7weeks... If i can give you any help, please dont hesitate to pm me..or reply on here..i will check back later. Oooops...a couple of questions... Is the parrot on a varied diet..does he get chicken bones etc for added calcium..or do you give calcium/multi-vitamin supplements? Is he a he or a she? Is he/she DNA sexed or surgically sexed? Edited December 22, 2008 by redmoor

macberran 2
Primative natives say that nature will often reflect what we do ourselves. This I have found with certain problems especially the poultry !! |They are very inteligent and the lasst one I had 21yrs ago died I believe from boredom. Just fell over. They just don't like being locked up ,best off luck and I hope the answer comes soon.

Its rare to find the actual root cause of plucking, its thought that as they pluck/self mutilate that they get a release of endorphins..so as opposed to it distressing them..they can and do get a 'high' from it. We have had birds come in here that have been self mutilators and ones that have made a hole in their own legs and have drunk the blood..nasty. Feel free to pm me anytime, i'll help if i can. jasper65 6
I would get him/her up the vets trace! Blood tests or a skin scrape might well show up something or it could well be stress or Boredom or even diet, don't get me wrong I'm not saying his diest is bad or he doesn't get enough attention but perhaps he/she wants some from the opposite sex , or just a conversation with another parrot might do the trick .... I have a few birds here not psittacines like your parrot but they still do the funniest of things when bored, I had one Pinch its feathers during the moult and shred them, another would mock attack perches in the aviary and wound its own feet..... good luck with him anyway trace and I hope you find the answer...... lurchergrrl 1,441
Redmoor, ever the voice of reason and knowledge Never heard the listerine trick before, that's a good one. My parrot never plucked. She was a Senegal, loud stroppy madam but a good bird. I drove myself mental trying to keep her occupied and properly fed. Not to be funny but ... Tracey did your bird see you plucking the turkeys and chickens? Could he have been copying you? I bet I sound an eejit for suggesting it but, they copy everything else. Just a thought
