Which lamp battery

Not sure if this is in the right section but it goes in hand with lamping my whippets so here goes.

 

I'm pissed off with my battery going dead after about an hour's lamping. I don't want to spend more good money on another couple of deben batteries taped together.

 

I read a post earlier about someone using a motorbike battery and looked some up. I can get a new 12V, 20ah sealed bike battery on ebay for under £50. At the same time I'll probably splash out on the charger/conditioner. It weighs 6kgs which is only about 1kg heavier than my current deben.

 

Has anyone else used a bike battery to good effect? how long can i expect to get out of a 20ah unit?

Get the Yellow Pages out mate and look for companies that supply the gear for Burglar Alarm Systems, they will have sealed lead acid batteries of the type you need for around half that price you just said, I got a 12V 18Ah battery for £20, and it's a Yuasa one so best quality.

 

As for charger, I've posted this charger before but it's worth posting again.

was that for a new battery???? my lass paid just shy of hundred quid for a deben 12v 20amp 8 months ago and its f****d already!!!

at the moment maplin have car jump starters for 19.99 that contain a 12 volt 17 amp battery, just take the battery out out of the said contraption. used in conjunction with a 6 amp charger you will have hours of nocturnal fun..

I saw those posted on another site, the big yellow jump start thing, but unfortunately ........... they don't seem to be on the Maplin site anymore.

Most electrical wholesalers will get them within a day or so at similar prices, I couldn't believe it when I saw the prices that were listed in CMW for the same batteries, someone has been pulling you lads pants down with those prices.

 

 

It's not even as if the alarm batteries are lower quality, they are exactly the same!

 

If you're finding the batteries aren't lasting very long then I'd recommend a better charger, 8 months is not long for a battery to last.

Went to Maplin's. F'all there in way of jumper starters. The shop was nearly empty, aprt from screws and connectors do they know something we don't?

 

I tried a local burglar alarm installer and he started baffling me with techno. He was a decent guy though and was talking about 2 differing types of battery. Slow discharge and fast discharge, the latter being for high fast energy drain like a starter motor for a car or a.....lure machine.

 

Armed with my smug new found knowledge I googled this company Here and bought a 12V 22ah sealed battery. He said it would drive a golf trolley (not the sit on type) around a golf course for 5 hours. The motor on the trolley is 200W. The golf bag, clubs and trolley weigh in at a fair amount on top of that so the capacity should easily give my 100W lightforce a fair amount of light time.

 

Together with a decent chager/conditioner and battery leads to go to the charger and same connectors for leads it came in at under £70 for the lot. The battery alone is down from £40 to £25 on their website.

I also use a 100w Lightforce lamp and have never used or needed anything more than a 7AH battery - although I know that Santa is bringing me one of the new Deben Lithium Ion batteries - which weighs about a third the weight of my current battery and is rated at 10AH. I'm puzzled firstly that you run your battery down so quickly which leaves me wondering 1) if the battery was a good one in the first place or 2) if there is something wrong with the way you are charging it or 3) if you are one of these people who have the lamp on all the time rather than just using it sparingly for spotting and running game and 4) I'm wondering how big you are, - I don't enjoy carrying a 7AH battery (I use a belt pack which weighs 7.5lbs including the battery but not including the lamp) plus game as the catches accrue and I shudder at the thought of lugging around a 22AH monster which must weigh 20-30lbs -plus the weight of whatever I catch.

LOL. All of the above. My present Deben 14ah came as two 7.2's strapped together. It weighs over 10 lbs already. The new one weighs 13 lbs. I have it in a small rucksack and walk for probably 3 or 4 hours in any one session. The deben is about 1 year old and never really held its charge.

 

I am not getting any younger and am now blind as a bat so I do use it quite a lot for negotiating fences and hedges.

 

Maybe the cluelite (sp?) with the secondary lamp would be the ideal solution for me but santa's already been and I'll have to wait.

Hi.

I carry a small LED torch on my belt, which I use for any climbing around etc - Tesco have some very, very good black, metal cased LED torches on sale from about £10 upwards. I wish you well with your new battery. Like you I am no longer in the first flush of youth (I started my lamping career in the mid-1970's) with eyesight that isn't quite what it once was and a touch of arthritis as well, so the weight issue matters to me in a way that it didn't twenty years ago and I just can't be arsed to go lamping for three or four hours, I go for an hour or two and that's enough for me these days and I stash whatever I catch at regular intervals to avoid lugging large weights around. this set up has never gone wrong for me over the last 2yrs. This is how it's set up

 

1. rip the crappy deben connections off, wire the lamp straight to baterrie (havnt seen it fail yet for me or my mates)

 

2' get rid of the shity bags you get for them(fed up of getting my mar to stitch the thing back together) and get a descent backpack you might have to modify so the battarie dont move about to much

 

3. Take the connections of the deben charger put crocadile clips on the end of the wires or just rap them around the connection point on the bat, make sure its noy plugged in. i also think the deben charger is ideal coz the yellow light goes of when fully charged and it was made for this type of bat. always put your bat straight on charge even if you use it for 10 mins

 

17ah 12v ebay £25 with the postage i struggle to kill this bat it goe's all night

 

thisis the way i do it might not suit somebody else
