Tiercel 6,986
After reading nearly all of Woodga's, P&G's and Snareman's posts. I was resolved to catch a rabbit by the use of a snare. With all the detailed information that they have provided even a complete beginner like myself should be able to snare the odd rabbit. The weather seemed in my favour to try out my first attempt at snaring. I even took my reading glasses with me so that perhaps I could see the beats better. I only took half a dozen snares with me as I wanted to do a small area with a pretty high density of rabbits. The biggest problem I had, was that I am not the only one who knows that there are rabbits there. Any how, I set out my half a dozen snares eventually finding runs where I could see the small beats. There are a lot of runs there but most have droppings all along the run and to my inexperienced eye no discernable small beats. I did find some with beats that I could see and set about setting the sares on them trying to remember all I have been reading the last few weeks. Feeling very confident that I may take a rabbit or 2 I made my way back to the van. When I got back to the van another van pulled up and out got shall we say travellers with 3 lurchers 2 terriers and an Alsatian. It was obvious that they were going to the place I had set the snares so I went down in front of them and pulled all the snares up. As it was a fair bet that they would not have been there in the morning had I not. Still I have benifitted from setting the snares, Even if it is only do not set any snares there till late afternoon. I did see beats today that I did not know were there previously, all thanks to the splendid advice provided by this forum. I have posted some pictures of couple of the set snares and all constructive criticism is welcome. Tiercel Edited December 19, 2008 by tiercel Quote Link to post
stubby 175
good write up, and good to include the pictures, as you say "others turned up" does that mean its common land?, may be better to practise on somewhere you have permission Quote Link to post

ianrob 2
Hi mate, great post. I love snaring too, can I just suggest that in your 3rd, 4th, and 5th, pics the beats are not in a straight line?? worth a mention though it might just be camera angle. It's just one of the points Glenn makes. They could still catch though. Good luck, ian. Edited December 20, 2008 by ianrob Quote Link to post
devonlad 0
Loop size looks good, one suggestion would be watch how far over the run your loop reaches, the kill area of your snare should be near centre of the beat to catch under the chin... best of luck, but as the others say, watch where you are setting them.
