lamped hares back in the day

A lamped hare to me has the same feeling in me gut as seeing a hare knocked over or one shot... Waste of a good hare. For me the Hare is the king of our wildlife, he stands out in the middle of the field believing he can beat all foe... No sitting near the fence (A fence is strands of wire seperating a field) for him So give him the respect he deserves, don't ambush him with a light....

I know there was a bit of an ongoing argument on this subject but back in the day when we were aloud to coarse hairs how many of you lamped them and whats peoples feelings on this proberbly just set my self up for anouther long drawn argument and slagging off but hear we go some think it wasnt sporting and some love it. I have read on a couple of topics on hear about hares arnt lamped well hear were I live they used to be lamped by all.

thoughts on this please.

Probably there dogs were not good enough to do them in the day time, to me there is No sport in Lamping hares, those little long ears could give great sport, and when you witnessed, a good course, in daylight, the rest is second best, thats why I dislike, the shooting of those fellows, and the lamping of them, I have had fantastic sport, with them, over the past 50 years, and I can honestly say I had some of the best dogs, at that job, and for me there was No better,cross, COLLIE X GREYHOUND, THIRTY ODD YEARS AGO, we never saw or heard of the saluki x yes there are some some of that breed are great dogs, WHIN, has a couple, BUT HE HAS A STAR BITCH 9YEARS OF AGE AND STILL ABLE TO DO HER JOB((( lANA A SELECTED BREED OF THE COLLIE X GREYHOUND. in the past the Lurcher was to fill the pot,and enjoy the sport, not slaughter and in todays world of Organic food

utter crap. both rabbits and hares use runs day or night they are as quick. take either of the run and a baby could catch them. why else would we send a fast dog out into the field at night and sit with a gatenet if the dog could catch them. In all of my days a never used any gate net and the way you are talking I do not think you ever saw a good dog work the hare, there is another old lad up in wigton nr stranraer he has a photo of two dogs that I had the mother was called tinker and her pup on the back of the photo he has written two CHAMPIONS IN TODAYS WORLD MONEY COULD NOT BUY, I would give you his phone number, and if you cared to talk to him he could also tell you true and great stories, even to this day he still goes out for walk with his dogs,, those two dogs I am talking about the mother, was bred in 1969, and her pup first litter was 1973.

Things improve as time goes on these dogs were proberbly very good in the day but relisticaly how good would they be in todays lurcher world you are talking about a time where ferrets were still fed on slops mate and dogs were fed from table scraps just wonder if you think they would hold up to todays athletes with the diets and training put forward by todays lurcher men and women not bieng disrespectfull just wondered what you truly think.

How come mate? not being funny but it would take a good fit pup to take one even on the lamp I dont think a dog should see a hare till at least 15month lamped or not just my opinion though

i dont lamp hares i just brought up not to slip on them on the lamp ,id prefer to ytry get a run on him in the day time when a dog is fully tested

yes ive took some hares on the lamp most dog men have no big deal but i for me i get the best kik from daytime running ive been running dogs for nearly 40 years its a good dog that can course for 5 or 6 mins over the big fields in the midlands or on the fens happy days

if you think hares are hard on the lamp try them in the day. if i see hares on the lamp i wont run them its a waste imo. theres not alot around my area so its good to get a run during the day. personally i hate to see them lamped or shot.

YOU ARE TALKING OF DIET, we could feed proper dog meat, complete sheep heads, full tongue, full bullock heads, complete with tongue, and all meat around the cheek bones, you could get, tripe, ALL FROM A LOCAL slaughter house, for a few bob, I had a clothes boiller, could hold a bullocks head + 3 to 4 sheep heads, I would split the heads, with the axe, add cabbage, + nettles, and boil I would remove, all the bones, and it would set into a a good jelly state, with all of the good meat, I had an old chest freezer, and I placed in there in plastic bags, about 1LB. portions, (( tripe I only fed once in awhile, cut in to portions, freeze it for about 2weeks,((( KILL THE PARASITES,)) THEN COOK along with the heads, and feed with a good biscuit, there was a wilson dog meal had fish meal through it, fantastic for the dogs coat, and we would sprinkle a little sulphur, powder over there meat just to keep there blood right, those dogs I had in the late fifties up to eighties, were bred from first class stock, the first was bred from Cotton king,( he won the waterloo cup, x a working collie bitch, when I went to breed out from the lurcher,again I used Johnnie Walkers, 100 pipers dog, he won the SCOTTISH national coursing, and several other top events, the Hare ran as fast then as it does today the rabbit the same, ((( we done it with home bred dogs and the reason we picked our dogs from working stock,
