Guest JohnGalway
Hi folks, I can't remember if I posted this before or not. A while back I was giving my shot foxes to a student in the University who was investigating how a disease in cattle which causes abortions spreads. He PM'd me the stomach contents results that he got from another fella, thought I'd post them for the sake of it. No, there's no photos I finally got the results of what was in the stomachs from the student that did them. Here is what he recorded in his notes on the foxes he did from you anyway. Just to mention that one of the problems with studies like this is stuff like vegatation and beetle carapaces that the stomach finds hard to break down are over represented. Where as stuff like meat is broken down quicker so less likely to be found. I got a person to look at those hair samples you thought were lamb but he has not got around to it yet! I will chase him up on it again. All the best and thanks again for your help. SportingShooter 0
Calf Nuts? As in the Feed you give to Cows in the shed? Interesting stuff anyway. I imagine the ones around here would have Chicken, Pheasant and Duckling. Gourmet Quote Link to post
Tiff 36
we had a bobcat in the high desert a few years ago and there was something like 40 mice packed into it's stomach ... they all looked perfectly intact other than being wet and dead. It was the sheer number of them that surprised me as the bobcat was about the size of a standard large adult bobcat, maybe 15 pounds. I'd seen a study on the stomach contents of caught sharks, there were things like tires, license plates, coolers etc, crazy! Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Yeah those calf nuts Though it doesn't say what kind, could be the compressed molassed beet pulp type which I could understand, they're sweet, often had a bit of the shredded stuff myself years ago lol, but the newer stuff is crap, all dust and dirt in it. Guest JohnGalway
Leather jacket is a type of insect I think? Some of the foxes I shot may have been a little ripe upon delivery  Some were shot in summer and for various reasons couldn't be picked up until the next day, by which the hoodies had been in and done their work I could guess it was the chest shot ones that had an exit wound around the ribs or behind that had their stomachs eaten out Quote Link to post

StephOC 6
Really interesting! I'm suprised how many invertebrates were positively identified, (especially ants!) My job for the next few years is to find out which mammals eat bumblebee nests. Foxes have been accused of doing so, but as of yet there's no proof of this happening in the UK. This gives me hope! - did the student publish? Quote Link to post

How did it catch a grasshopper? Just goes to show what little chance young birds or anything edible has with them round. Quote Link to post
