dogs-n-natives 1,182
I cant comment on other quarry etc, although my half cross has taken a share of all game local to me, he is not what I call a good all rounder. I can only speak of the work he was bred for, which he excells at, and I would never ask any other type of dog to achive the same results. I am considering a new adition to the kennel in the summer, a lurcher for rabbits and other game, and I have given no thought towards a bull cross at all, and thats true. Im thinking saluki/grey with maybe a small portion of collie. Quote Link to post
lampy 18
just thought id post this topic, it seems to me that most people run bull x's all i want to know is why? i did used to like these dogs but now just seems like everyone has them and ive gone off them, what can you get from a bull x that uyou cant get from other dogs ? in my opinion there is nothing, what do you think karl Hi all i have had my bull x,s for the last 4 years and i,ve yet to find a breed to compare to them for what i want out of a running dog. the stamina and drive is what i like more than anything. some of the bumps my old bitch has had are un real yet after a day or to she screming to go again. dont get me rong there are some bull x,s that i,ve seen that i would,nt waste a bullet on but if the breedings there then i would reckomend this breed as an excellent all rounder. collie/grey 238
I like bull x's because of their character, they are determined, strong, willing to please and fun to be around and loving when not working. They are also intelligent. I have a 3/4 x. She will do deer all day long, doesn't give a damn about teeth, but with rabbits she doesn't kill em, she catches and carrys them alive, you have to kill em. I also have a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie. She can do anything the bull x can do, but i prefer the bull x's way of oing it and i prefer the bull x's character. The collie x can be to brainy for her own good and occasionally picks what she runs if she thinks she won't catch it she won't run it and on some larger quarry she used to get abit vocal.........bull x is a silent hunter. dogs-n-natives 1,182
collie/grey, sounds like a cracking dog that! Have you ever had saluki crosses to compare him to? Edited December 16, 2008 by dogs-n-natives Quote Link to post
whippeter69 88
I think that the bull cross will have a lot more determination then other breed of crosses.Personally i do not like the look of the bull cross, i am far to young to own such a powerful and large dog at my age. That is why i will not own one, they are not on my list as i would prefer the look of another dogs that is smaller but will have the same speed and stamina with as the bull cross. But i totally agree that the older more experienced bull cross owners use they for a hunting reason and the younger genoration use them for the "look" and "respect" thinking that they look hard with a dog that is way out of their control. Guest night time my time
buddy i have an old nine year old colli cross bitch sheell go jaw to jaw then you do the nessasary and a saluk same , in the country were it is legal, no bull and ive saw coyote hound lift one of the ground and malky it , but realy anybody thta wants a fite to the end no real dog, man, not lurchers any way as a lurcher is a traditional pot hunter and the more strings on his bow the better ,the dog thta destroys them in there legal land would tiol on daylite haRES ROE BOLTING RABBITS POACHING PHEASANTS ETC what atraditional dog should do Whin has hit the nail on the head, I would never contemplate owning a bull cross Lurcher as they are all Braun, the only reason I can see that anyone would contemplate owning such a beast is perhaps they have failed to enter, a pastoral cross, it must also be observed that when you view these Bull crosses which I have at game-fairs, it would seem by the amount of wounds on their presence that they have in fact failed to undo the ways of their foe, as I’ve never seen a Collie-Cross Lurcher that takes fox on a regular basis to be marked up in this way. thats because all the foxes the collie cross has has was already DEAD where you get this one from mate? and chimp, iv got more than one collie x that will stick its face down any hole and hang on,keep on about the bull determination? thats why they dont have a long working life, they dont feel pain, imadgine if nothing hurt or you thrived on pain and had no off button how long you'd live, still not knocking them but there a drawing dog at the end of the day, thats why a bull, Quote Link to post
roybo 2,873
a awefull lot of generalising in this thread i must say seems everyone rooting for collie crosses are refering to heavy half cross bullx's and everyone rooting for bullx's are talking about the few collie's that are too clever to try or yap........i'm sure we've all seen quick bull x's and hard collies feck sakes all grow up Quote Link to post
chimp 299
well thats me converted lol Quote Link to post
shamus 36
I think collie/grey made a valid point re.the bull x's character, thet are cracking dogs to own but this should'nt blind us to the fact that some of them have faults, mine included. For instance mine is a great rabbit dog, always 100% but they are no good to eat when she get's them. This site never seems to tire of these pointless 'whats the best' arguments, surely you keep what is best for you? cantona 310
a bull cross is bred for a job that certain other crosses can do, but if you buy a pup and run it on for two years untill its ready for that type of work you want the odds stacked in your favour, the odds are on the bull cross hense the popularity.
