auld salmon 28
Hi I bought a ferret about 1 month ago the man who owned him said he's 1 year old and working. I started off going out with my uncle ferreting coz he has all the nets longnets so on. when i put him down a hole he stays down for about maybe 5 mins tops not even that and since I had him he's never bolted anything. So I took him out Saturday with a friend to this place were I know there ar rabbits coz I go shooting there. On this 1 small field thers at least 15 - 20 rabbits there its full of them because the farmer doesn't give permission out to anybody. We got it because its my friends uncle. Anyway got there about 10:30 found some holes got to be rabbits down there coz there's rabbit droppings all around the holes and paw prints plus iv seen the rabbits there. So we collar up net all the holles put him down he comes back after about 2 mins i keep putting him back down but he just keeps coming back up after 2 mins and desnt bolt anything what is wrong with him ? give him time, when I was young lad living and working in LONDON 1962, I bought a ferret, out of pet shop in PETTICOAT LANE, the place we were doing a job in was moving with rabbits, CARAMEL COLLEGE FOR JEWS, oxford side of READING, I new the ferret had never been worked and very seldom handled, my only chance was he could bolt one, and the truth was the smell of him actually bolted the rabbit, cot the rabbit , the ferret was playing peek aboo, opened the rabbit up so I could get him out, he got the taste of the hot liver, and the purring noise of him and jumping in circles, any way, cut a long story short he become a very good worker, and I used to get 10 shillings a rabbit, at RATHBONE MARKET, CANNING TOWN LONDON E16. YOU COULD BUY 8GALLONS OF PETROL £1-00 AND BEER WAS 2SHILLING A PINT, YES LADS THEY WERE THE DAYS BUT MA HEART USED TO CRY OUT FOR THOSE OLD GREEN HILLS OF SCOTLAND, so give him time and take a good dog with you the next time to mark the sets, happy ferreting, border lad do you still do a bit with ferrets or you retired ? Brimmer 220
Freekin eck, offline fot 2 nights (bloody broadband) it seems like ages ago! Not all make the working grade, if nature had it's way, these animals would have not continued to go on and breed, therefore natural selection has not taken place. This is taken away from any animal that is domesticated, it does not have to run the gauntlet to survive. I've seen it plenty of times, some don't have the heart for the job they were intended for, we as owners keep them alive and cared for, and go on and breed from them. Nature wouldn't breed from them. Beside this, young un's do need a chance to get going, run them along a more experienced ferret, don't try and work them when fat as f##k. (how many fat atheletes do you see?) And also have a little patience. You are probably working one of this years to be honest, give it a few more try's, then maybee think about the move. Quote Link to post

mandog 37
I've had ferrets like that, my hob was like that but after a few seasons he settled down. I must admit i only keep the ones that take to it straight away and try and give the rest away. Not saying the ones i gave away were bad just not any good for me. But doing well for there new owners. I had them do what you say and i thought that there were no rabbits or else they would go for them. So i've put down a goodun and just watched them jump out of the holes. Thats why i only keep the ones that are perfect for me to begin with. Quote Link to post
Flying Ferrets 0
Do you have only one ferrets? Why don't you get him some compagny? buy or get another ferret and then try going with both, to see if its only him or if you are just really unlucky with the rabbits... Quote Link to post
