pencoed hunter 7
Hi I bought a ferret about 1 month ago the man who owned him said he's 1 year old and working. I started off going out with my uncle ferreting coz he has all the nets longnets so on. when i put him down a hole he stays down for about maybe 5 mins tops not even that and since I had him he's never bolted anything. So I took him out Saturday with a friend to this place were I know there ar rabbits coz I go shooting there. On this 1 small field thers at least 15 - 20 rabbits there its full of them because the farmer doesn't give permission out to anybody. We got it because its my friends uncle. Anyway got there about 10:30 found some holes got to be rabbits down there coz there's rabbit droppings all around the holes and paw prints plus iv seen the rabbits there. So we collar up net all the holles put him down he comes back after about 2 mins i keep putting him back down but he just keeps coming back up after 2 mins and desnt bolt anything what is wrong with him ? No 1 is going to give good ferrets away. Im thinking of selling him in sumer time or when the ferrets start mating or whatever u call it then get 2 young 1ns Quote Link to post
The one 8,479
Try another ferret in the burrow the next time and if the second ferret bolts any rabbits bury it with the rabbit guts Quote Link to post
The one 8,479
Why sell it your just passing on the problem if you cant give it to a pet home do the right thing . Quote Link to post
Malt 379
Just because a rabbit hole has got fresh trade around it, doesn't mean it's occupied. It's where a dog comes into it's own by marking. More often than not, it's the overgrown, unused looking buries that actually hold the rabbits in our experience. We've learned the hard way to trust our dogs. Many a time when the dogs first started marking, they'd pass on holes that looked 'a dead cert', and we'd netted them up regardless, only to draw the inevitable blank! EDITED: Most ferrets will work. If you're quiet enough around the buries, the rabbits won't hang around long enough to worry about whether the ferret is a good worker or not! Quote Link to post
andy s410c 61
Give the young hob a chance first of all .How many times has he been out once, twice??Both of my young hobs are doing ok they've both done the bizz & other times they've been just as you've described BUT when the rabbits are at home they are spot on. Give him a bit more time to settle with you, maybe he's never been worked :unsure:do you work him with other experienced, working ferts??Don't just write the fella off after the first hurdle, time & patience he should turn out ok... Cornio 0
I'm yet to be convinced that there's a single ferret out there that won't work eventually. They've all got it in them, that's what they are, that's what they do. Give him time. Quote Link to post
daniel8822 0
around me theres a few rabbits i see with the lamp in a field and the field next to it is covered in rabbit holes, but around by me they dont live in the warrens they prefer the netles and bushes ect. and your ferret should get better everytime you go out just try him a few more times. YOU COULD BUY 8GALLONS OF PETROL £1-00 AND BEER WAS 2SHILLING A PINT, YES LADS THEY WERE THE DAYS BUT MA HEART USED TO CRY OUT FOR THOSE OLD GREEN HILLS OF SCOTLAND, so give him time and take a good dog with you the next time to mark the sets, happy ferreting, Quote Link to post
