gnipper 6,520
Their temperament is hereditary imo so I can't see why working ability/instinct won't be. I've read about the ferrets from Abbots brothers being tame even though they weren't handled and a mate of mine remembers when him and his mates were kids receiving their ferrets on the train that were tame and worked well and that place must have been like a mustelid hancocks. I think the key with kits & taming is food, if you shove enough in & they thrive minimal handling imo is required, i hate reading about bitey kits basically because i am of the opinion they get mauled to death & quite frankly pissed off so they nip large litters can be seperated into small groups but again if enough food is added daily sibling rivalry should be minimal if not your not feeding enough Kay wtf has that got to do with things that are in a ferrets genes? Hate reading about bitey kits all you like it will never be anything i've typed, most the threads on bitey kits are written by people who have bought on a whim without even knowing what they eat hence all the threads in summer like 'whats the best food?' and 'what should I keep my ferrets in?'. I was commenting on ferrets being tame without being handled and tamed as it was bred into them to be placid. Quote Link to post

As i have never taken any notice of what you have posted in the past are you normally that aggresive when someone disagrees with your opinion ? Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,520
It wasn't agression it was more confusion as to what your post has to do with traits that are bred into lines of ferrets. As I normally try not to take notice of anything you've posted i'll go back to that, be sure to let us all know when you catch your second rabbit though. How many years was it now since the picture of the one you caught(?) once upon a time? Quote Link to post

Leeview 791
Be interested to know if these ferrets line (in-)bred from generations of good workers work when supplied as kits to people who haven't a clue. See my reply to S.S. and let me know how you train your workers? Stock from generations of good workers will produce a very high percentage of workers, which even in the hands of novices will work well. Why would nt they? once a ferret is entered into a warren theres not a lot any handler can do to influence it from maybe be 50-60ft away(not deep) The ferret either has working determination or it does nt, if it has so much the better BUT it still may not be a good top notch worker suitable for breeding from Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

People who don't have a clue are normally Pet ferret owners who feed nothing but dry food to a meat eater. Ferreters have kept working animals for centuries not flurry ferret fanciers. More dribble and petty pet owner vs working animal cobblers.......... If you don't know the answer why not just say so, and leave the peurile baiting to the kids? My humble apologies and you wonder why people get the bollock ache with you. Quote Link to post

gnipper 6,520
Back on topic the best ferrets i've ever had were off the keepers dad who was the keeper before him and had the same line of ferrets for years, I could have probably picked one out of 50 other ferrets too as they all had the same features and were unlike most others, can't describe how but they were. This old boy certainly knew his ferreting and at about years old was still out and about on his carrier bike with a sack of ferrets on the front miles from home, he's in a home now the poor old feller. Unfortunately the jill was the only ferret I ever lost at work (with a locator on) and the hob had a run in with my old border (who got the hiding of his life), he survived being bitten but must have damaged something internally as he faded a bit later on so I never got to breed them.
