Tiff 36
I'm sure someone on here who is local to you can guide you the right way, and I'd think you'd want to get the pup sorted as quickly as possible?
HAREHUNTER 0
Ligament/tendon damage can take a long time to heal: up to 6 months: get the dog to a greyhound man for a proper diagnosis: if your'e letting the pup run around when the healing process has only just begun your'e taking it back to square one every time the pup runs on it.I once had to keep a young dog on the lead for 6 months after he damaged his stifle (knee) joint ligaments! am keepin him on lead for every walk but every now and again let him off lead for 5 mins to 'let a little steam off' he always seems fine when he's out but stiffens up when he settles down in house will be keepin him on lead forom now on to see if that helps him cheers for the advice i would hate to spoil him and all advice is welcome HH

HAREHUNTER 0
Like others said it could just be a ligament problem in which it will take awhile to sort out especially being that he is a pup it also could be something like a joint problem or disfiguration ( which is basically dysplasia ) or osteoarthritis in which that usually would be the case after having a long run they tend to stiffen up & kinda shudder there infected areas ie back legs etc, and especially in this weather arthritis is shite, or it could just be a stupid sprain thats taking its time & without a good look its hard to tell, is there any inflammation? Does he have any pain when you touch the areas concerned? or when you stretch his legs out etc? try this when the dog is abit better before & after a walk and let us know the results ( you can pm me if ya like ) Dont worry to much at the moment but i would suggest like others putting him on a BARF diet you could also try adding something like Ester C & i would keep adding the cod liver oils too & some rest for awhile Check out ripplys wrinkes for some info on the leg problems ( do a google search for "ripleys wrinkles american bulldogs" & you should find some good info. Good luck & let us know how it goes just been out with the pup and checked him over on way out ...he looked fine , was'nt favouring the leg and it did'seem to be bothering him when i streched the leg out or bent the knee.....while he was out on lead again he never bothered...been back for 30 mins and he seems to be ok so will leave him to rest up for an hour then see how he looks he has no obvious signs of swelling or inflammation to look at him, not so much as a whimper when i touch the area i keep reading bout the BARF diet and would like to know a bit more about it...what to feed, when to feed, how much to feed just all the standard questions really thaanks for the advice to all who have posted HH
burnie69 376
You might find thats its just a case of too much play for the bones to cope with, get yourself some calcium powder, used to be called stress powder but they discontinued it, but there others simular to it, it works wonders everyday with grub, wont do any harm and will strengthen the bones up in no time. sandymere 8,263
At five months it's still growing so 21%, which is then cut with vegs, is very low protein for a growing pup I'd get it on a complete puppy food. Next pop down to the butchers for waste bones/meat etc such as off cuts of breast bone and with the extra protein these give you can give the vegtables without dropping the percentage to much. The average vet is a bit like a GP in that they are a first port of call for general stuff but if you have a more specialist problem then you need a vet that specialises in that area, in your case would someone with an interest in orthopaedics or a greyhound vet. If you can find on a qualified physio that deals with dogs they can be brilliant with ligament type injuries. I'd avoid unqualified bone men as I've seen a few charletans that do more harm than good. Caravan Monster 323
Although I would rather consult a running dog specialist, these are worth a try: http://www.mctimoney-chiropractic.org/treat_animals.htm My local practitioner straightened out my old bitch for me, and the treatment worked fine. rick 0
At 5 and a half month old the pup is still growing ,, it may be lacking in its diet give it more fish ,oils ets cut down the protien id bet its its diet have a look at what youve been feeding it could be there? he's on a dry 'complete' food 21% protien and 12 % oils he gets the veg peeling's boiled up 2/3 times a week with half the amount of dry food and of course the inevitable "treats" from the kids lol what about cod liver oil tabs???????? add conditioning tablets to his diet they work wonders
richard25 0
mate, if your worried about how much raw foods to use etc, get yourself down to the petshop or order online "prizechoice" its basically just minced meat or tripe ( or whichever flavour you pick ) and theres no messing around you just defrost it give it to the dog & its not pricey either. Hope everything is sorted with the dog anyway mate & goodluck
