well i guess that reading this site can tell you more than any vet so here goes......

my pup 5 1/2 mths has been having a few problems with his back knee... when he gets out for a good run/walk he seems to come back ok then a couple of hours later his leg 'stiffens' up and he gets a limp where his knee seems to 'kick' in a little?!?!?!

vet recons its " soft tissue damage" and prescribed 2 weeks bed rest so gave the pup 4 weeks to be on safe side, yet the problem seems to be back

so am gonna see what the general opinion is on here before i go back and spend another 100 quid on 2 weeks bed rest lol

At 5 and a half month old the pup is still growing ,, it may be lacking in its diet give it more fish ,oils ets cut down the protien id bet its its diet have a look at what youve been feeding it could be there?

he's on a dry 'complete' food 21% protien and 12 % oils

he gets the veg peeling's boiled up 2/3 times a week with half the amount of dry food

and of course the inevitable "treats" from the kids lol

what about cod liver oil tabs????????

cod liver oil is meant to be gud for joints, i give them to my dog when i remember

you should try feeding it a raw diet if you can

Was it a general small animal vet that looked at the dog? If so, it would be preferable to see a greyhound vet, or even a good 'boneman' (get some references first though), and get the problem diagnosed by someone who specializes in running dogs. What region are you in? Someone may be able to recommend.

it was a country vet ( farm animals and the like)

am in north northumberland if any one can recommend a good 'bone man' its always worth a second opinion in my eyes

Ligament/tendon damage can take a long time to heal: up to 6 months: get the dog to a greyhound man for a proper diagnosis: if your'e letting the pup run around when the healing process has only just begun your'e taking it back to square one every time the pup runs on it.

I once had to keep a young dog on the lead for 6 months after he damaged his stifle (knee) joint ligaments!

Like others said it could just be a ligament problem in which it will take awhile to sort out especially being that he is a pup it also could be something like a joint problem or disfiguration ( which is basically dysplasia ) or osteoarthritis in which that usually would be the case after having a long run they tend to stiffen up & kinda shudder there infected areas ie back legs etc, and especially in this weather arthritis is shite, or it could just be a stupid sprain thats taking its time & without a good look its hard to tell, is there any inflammation? Does he have any pain when you touch the areas concerned? or when you stretch his legs out etc? try this when the dog is abit better before & after a walk and let us know the results ( you can pm me if ya like )

Dont worry to much at the moment but i would suggest like others putting him on a BARF diet you could also try adding something like Ester C & i would keep adding the cod liver oils too & some rest for awhile

Check out ripplys wrinkes for some info on the leg problems ( do a google search for "ripleys wrinkles american bulldogs" & you should find some good info.

Good luck & let us know how it goes
