Feeding rats, some advice please?

Recommended Posts

Think you should give up on this Idea, feed it dry if she can't stand the sight of rat being killed, your in danger of becoming creul for no reason, letting a rat loose with a ferret in a caravan every time it needs feeding is just ludicrous. :nono:

Im with stealthy on this. Ferrets would prefer the easier meal rather than chasing after a rat in a caravan when they can be fed something easy like mince or rabbit. Also surely its illegal to feed live animals to pets in Denmark?

No not really. the law says that you HAVE to kill the animal as quick and painless as possible. so you can feed a rat if you are sure the ferret will kill it within a second... but I don't think thats going to happend.... it's leagal to feed live mice to snakes and so on.

And for the record to some of you. I'm not the one wanting to give my ferrets living rats. Maybe I misunderstand some of the posts as this is not my native language, I don't know?

You can buy dead and living rats for the feeding of snakes and ferrets and rats are fine as ferret food, but I just don't think they should be given alive.

My own ferrets gets mice, rabbits, rats, chicken, duck, pidgeon etc as i believe in BARF feeding, but not on the account of my ferrets...

I think you will find you are supposesed to feed them live if it is a must to keep them alive or feeding thats why snakes are fed this way. There is just so many ways of feeding them as they are so popular and the fact you are risking them losing an eye for no reason is stupid i just think you dont understand it.. Its like leaving a cow in a dogs kennel theres no point really..

I DO understadn that! I'm not feeding live animais to my ferrets! And this post is about I'm trying to convince someone else not to either  Am I misunderstanding you or what? Sorry... I'm not sure I get your point, but I'm not the one feeding live animals to my ferrets and I would never recommend it to anyone....

I know its not you and its your friend.. If the ferret would only eat live rats and thats it i would say go ahead, the reason people feed snakes rats and mice is because somtimes thats all they eat and would otherwise die. You can tell your friend if there is no reason than just doing it for fun then they are risking injuring the ferret for no reason ..

actually they eat dry food and I think she never tried to feed them dead mice/rats because shes afraid of killing the mice/rats.

I already told her its not really leagal that way she wants to do it, but she think its good for her ferrets to hunt the rats and she wont believe that a rat can hurt a ferret...

The mice she also just lets loose in the caravan for the ferrets to hunt. I think thats wrong too, but with the rats I'm afraid it could end badly for the ferrets? Even though maybe she would learn something from that, its not fair to the ferrets.

I think they would eat dead mice if she gave them that as they are used to living and know what it is even if the mice are dead (imo).

The ferrets are not the problem, they are quite normal... the owner is the problem.

and shes not really a friend, as much as just someone i know and diskuss ferrets with.

tell her to use traps that kill... i dont see the problem with feeding mice live (i got arse rapped by kay on hear for admiting that) but rats are differnt as they are ALOT tougher and can hurt ferrets....

I'll suggest that to her :) Thanks.

but it seems like she thinks the hunt is good for the ferrets... It's a little like talking to a door. I hoped maybe some had a picture of a ferret hurt by a rat that would talk its own language, but I'll try and talk to her again and suggest the rat traps.

I cant seem to download pics as they are too large but i had a hob which looked pretty bad. He was doing a job for a reason and that was vermin control not for its owners blindness..
