Guest oldskool
irishwolfhounds are a re- created breed they died out when wolves were made extinct in the uk. the original wolfhound would have been more like a deerhound. That was my conclusion too after reading books, articles in magazines, internet sites and talking to wolfhound owners. But we have been corrected on our logical conclusion by Countryboyo, apparently it's an English conspiracy against the Irish and there fine canine breed. When i get five minuites i must ask him the real truth about the moon landing, JFKs shooting, 9/11 and Princess Diannas death. i remember an article i scanned over a while a go... i recall it sayin that great dane was being used in the make-up of the wolfhound?? about 5 years a go an advert in the buy and sell was for wolfhound x whippet pups from Armagh... i phoned the lad up and he told me the mother (wolfhound) had been quite a good coursing dog "considering its size", he added... the sire was a fiesty wee whippet dog used with ferrets... to cut a long story short a couple of years later when they were grown they were popping back up again in the buy and sell one at time... i think the breed has nothing good to offer for the UK or Irish hunter... and the deerhound is a much more sensible cross Quote Link to post

But we have been corrected on our logical conclusion by Countryboyo, apparently the wolfhound is a pure breed going back centuries and those who say otherwise are part of an English conspiracy against the Irish and their fine canine breed. chartpolski 24,291
Fireman is right ! the Wolfhound is now, and in it's present guise probably never was, of any use as a hunting dog in this country ! In Oz there are still working lines, and are regularly crossed with other breeds to get pig dogs. The Wolhound of today is only a relatively new breed; being crossed between what was left of the old Wolfhounds and deerhounds, 'Danes and Mastiffs. Very impressive dogs, but who wants a dog of that size that only has a life expectancy of 6 - 8 years and suffers many maladies, including cancer ?? I like to see them....but as a cross for a Lurcher....... Cheers. Quote Link to post
