Hello from Richie in Dorset.

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I'm Richie from sunny Weymouth, down in Dorset; not far from Chesil beach. Some of the sea anglers on here will probably know it well.

I fired my first pellet when I was a little kid, at an air-rifle range at a fair, while on holiday in Cornwall. I'm not sure how old I was, but Dad had to cock the rifle; I wasn't big enough or strong enough.

Having knocked down four targets with four shots, I was able to choose a prize from the bottom shelf of the display. The least useless item was a pottery bowl inscribed with the words: "A Present From Norwich". The fact that I had never been to Norwich didn't dampen my pleasure at all. The bowl stayed on my bedroom mantlepiece for years.

From then on, I made a bee-line for the shooting gallery whenever I was near an amusement arcade. I was particularly fond of the rifle-range in the arcade at Swanage back in the sixties. It seems unthinkable these days, but the guns were .22 bolt-action, rim-fire rifles, and the range was at the front of the arcade, so one was standing almost on the pavement while shooting. I'm sure that it wouldn't be allowed nowadays.

As I got older, I discovered that girls weren't just people who couldn't play football, they had other attributes as well. They provided sufficient distraction to keep me away from guns completely throughout my teens. After that, marriage and parenthood kept me busy.

Now I'm fifty-four I have fewer distractions. Santa (Wifey and daughter) is bringing me my first air-rifle for Christmas. As a beginner, I'm keen to pick as many brains as I can. I'll probably be pestering you all with silly questions, but I'll try not to be too much of a nuisance.

I shall be keeping to my back garden initially, especially until I have improved my skills, but moving on to hunting at a later stage might be a pleasant way to provide something for the pot. I already catch my own fish suppers; a rabbit stew or pigeon pie could be an addition to the menu one day.
