Hunting on

Recommended Posts

hi i have a wheaten cross bitch and she used to do it when she was younger i think wheaten crosses can be a bit over keen so what i done was keep her on easy rabbits and kept her in until i had right sort of night when it was really dark and windy. i always give her a test run first and i would punnish her if she hunted up but after that i just gave her squaters and easy runs and i always ended the night on a good note and never give her to much.shes alot older now and i track roe threw the day with her and she is fine on the lamp.

Shock collar  Back to basics, train in the field as well as at home. Unless you are a highly experienced trainer then you can do far more damage with a shock collar than any benefits you could get. This dog is still a pup and is still probably going through the teenage 'deaf you out' stage.

Get out mooching by day and continue practicing recall before trying on the lamp. Also, follow D.Sleights method of lamping a dummy in the back garden or field with no rabbits: a lot of dogs need 'programming' to obey the same commands when out as they do at home.

sound advice. my tyke used to be like this.i went back to basiics and when walking him through the day, would call him back every 5 mins or so,fussing him when he came back.he's now almost spot on.certainly is when on his own but not yet 100% when other dogs are around, still has his "deaf moments.!(in the day)

Well its all gone tits up again, I tried again tonight not lamping just working on recall. He spotted a bunny, straight back to square one.

I got the ball out he glanced back as if to say "f**k your ball theres rabbits about"

I must admit i gave him a clout when he did come back.

Ill just keep trying. :)

Look back quite a few pages for Training a Lamping Pup, or put it in search, read the atricle I wrote and try doing it, forget about rabbits until sorted. Good Luck

Probably the worst thing you could have done mate [i gave him a clout when he did come back], I would imagine he'll associate the clout with coming back. ;) Then he'll be thinking to himself feck that going back to him,he just hit me. :o

If you are keen to "give him a clout" it would be far better to give him one when he's in the act of doing wrong, which would mean you having to run across the field to him and catching him when he's hunting up.

no piont in clouting a dog on the way back you need to chech him before he runs of , got a young saluk who runs on if a fresgh roe smell but kept him on rabs ran him a bit and he calmed down and he knows whose boss now so far so good

i have only ever seen the shock collar used once ,it was on a dog that would do a similar thing ,it was not used a second time because it worked ,probibly because the dog was a thinker, and not that head strong .it might be worth you trying it at least once to see how it reacts ,but with out knowing the dog ,you might have your work cut out ,
