Microchipping legally docked pups

Recommended Posts

To start with yes we all know what we think of this law.

What I want to know is if anyone knows the rules on who does the microchipping. I have recently done a microchipping course so now fully qualified and insured to do this. But someone told me that vets are only supposed to microchip docked pups. Yet somebody else told me that they had spoken to DEFRA (as they are a microchipper too) and they said no as she is qualified she can do it. Have a litter of pups that need chipping and wanted to offer this service locally doing 'litter discounts' but now not sure where I stand. Going to call DEFRA later but their a nusiance as one person says one thing and another says completely different!!!

Advice please anyone

I recently brought a JRT bitch from a local farmer, he only used the sire and dam for rats and the occasional rabbit, I like the look of them as they a proven real game in the past. Typical farmer always switched on for making a few extra quid, he had the pups tailed legally docked. When i picked up my bitch Peanut I was given the vets cert stating that these were working dogs etc etc etc.

Two weeks back I took my pup to the local vet for the first of her jabs, like a twat I did not take the cert with me. The vet refused to jab Peanut because of the tail being docked. I was going to tell her to feck-off but thought better of it. I explained that I had the cert but had forgotten it as this did not effect giving the puppy her jabs. The vet told me that she would not chip the dog without the cert. This saturday I returned for the second jab and the chip, cert was safely stored away in pocket. On entering, the first words out of her mouth was where is the cert, with a far amount of glee I handed it over.

She informed me that this was the first cert she had seen and first she had filled in. She asked to take a photo copy, having nothing to hide I agreed. Peanut duely had the second jab and chip. The vet informed me that she had turned away and lost a lot of business because she is against docking. !

I told her that she was a vet and not a Copper and should be inpartial and but the dogs welfare first, she went ape-shit. I am now looking for a new vet. !!! :whistling:

My pups have been legally docked, its just the chipping side of things that concerns me. Good luck with your vets!!!

anybody who is registered to microchip can chip the pups , the dog should be chipped within 3 months of the cert being issued ie 3 months from docking

loophole ; to be legal if the dog is docked it must be micro chipped BUT YOU DONT HAVE TO LEGALLY REGISTER THE CHIP ie register it with petlog etc so you have complyed with the law but the chip can only be traced to the implanter and not the dog so i know from experince that a lot of lads dont like the idea of being registered and traceable so talk nicely to your implanter if you dont want them to register the dog its down to you , personally i think it defeats the object of having it chipped but i have chipped 1000s of dogs now and only a few have asked not to be registered with petlog but i know who they are and should the dog get lost/stolen i can look them up and notify them but thats between me and them and no other interfering bizzy body

You dont have to microchip the pup! vets are using this as an excuse to make extra from the docking!....the vet i use is a retired vet and he docks 5-6 litters a week he doesnt microchip a single pup!!! i asked him he said its not a legal requirement only one other vets are using to get pups chipped!

When I had my pups docked this summer the vet refused to give me the certificate until I'd taken them back for chipping: they said that otherwise I could have taken in some similar looking pups which I'd docked at home then got them chipped as the original ones the vet had docked: they had already had someone try to do that!

Mine were chipped at 6 weeks old.

Topper is right Gary. If you go on the DEFRA website they refer you to the OPSI.gov website where all the details are. If you want to check it out the link is: http://www.opsi.gov.uk/legislation/wales/w...i_20071028_en_1

and states the following

Identification of docked dogs

5.—(1) In order to be identified as a subsection (3) dog as required by section 6(8) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 a dog must be microchipped—

(a) by a veterinary surgeon or a veterinary nurse acting under the supervision of a veterinary surgeon; and

(B) using a microchip which complies with either ISO standard 11784 or Annex A to ISO standard 11785 of the International Standards Organisation’s standards for microchips(2).

(2) A dog may only be microchipped for the purposes of these Regulations after the owner, or a person whom the veterinary surgeon who is to carry out or supervise the microchipping reasonably believes to be representing the owner, has made a signed and dated statement in Part 4 of a certificate in the form prescribed in Schedule 2.

(3) The veterinary surgeon who carries out or supervises the microchipping must certify that fact in Part 5 of a certificate in the form prescribed in Schedule 2.
