We've got a forrester, they were the only ones tall enough for our dogs, the tallest dog being 31". If you are using it for lamping and need to multi task, a manual would be a pain in the ass. We love our automatic, don't have to think when you drive!

manuals are better because they have a "low" box auto's and turbos dont, legacy's have less ground clearance than foresters but that problem can easily be solved by fitting "outback" suspension on the legacy, also legacys have a bit more boot space and a bit more leg room for the rear passengers, both equally as good but i do prefer the forester myself, leave 2.5 and 2.0 turbos alone, the 2.0 or 2.2 engines are bombproof and still have loads of power...... ;)

do all the subaru manuals have a low box or is it just the forester. what are the impreza's like off the tarmac i dont mean the fancy turbo ones just the normal estates

impreza's, legacy's and foresters all have a low box apart from turbo's and auto's......

the impreza non turbo is just as capable off road as the others, just less boot space really...... ;)

i used to have a 90 300tdi and i agree it was good rarly getting stuck, but she was just to slow and if you was traverling any distance by the time you got there you was that stiff and full off cramp that it took aggood hour to straighten out and then the day was spoiled my dreding the ride back. but after saying all that i would have another if i was in the situation to beable to run more than one motor. my dog bus has to double up as the familly car allso.
