Some fair and wise advice given so far :victory: especially from Withellmoor.

I would tend to go for a spaniel (cocker or springer) for a first dog if rough shooting is the order of the day, labs just can't flush game as well as spaniels, but as Kev has said you will be spending the next 10 years or so with this dog so you have to go with a dog that you personally like the look and sound of, maybe spent an hour or two with a pro dog trainer, get a demo of the breed types and what jobs they do and are expected to carry out, this would be money very well spent and give you a first hand insight into what the dogs can provide for you.

Oh and I agree that cockers do not suffer the cold any more or less than any of the other breeds I have

I would go for a lab imo. Probably go for a bitch 1st as they seem to be less head strong than the dogs. Train it yourself because you could pay a bit of money for a trained dog and sometimes they still are not up to the job.

Probably get pelters for saying this but i would steer clear from the vizsla' as SOME of them can be quite aggresive and very protective towards there owners.

weimaraners yes...the dominant trait is in a lot of them ive rarely seen it in the vizsla tho...id say this was an isolated case...altho my best guard dog years ago was my labrador buck... he left his teeth in one or two of my mates who got too close to me lol!!!
