Whinging Dog

Recommended Posts

I have a jrtxwhippet and he's 15months old. He is very very whiney.

he is taken on long regular walks and is always very tired after these walks. He is worked regularly on the lamp.

He whines when he isn't comfortable, ie no bed around. he whines when he isnt getting any attention. I take him to the horse yard with me where i work, and he's really good when i am putting the horses out and follows me for a little walk, but when i am mucking he wanders around whining. He will whine when i'm there and when i am absent. he whines at night time sometimes but is not so bad with that now. At the moment my other dog is in season so he in the kennel on his own, i make sure he is well walked before he goes in to the kennel. but when he whines in the kennel its like a really loud cry, similar to a cry if you where cutting his leg off or something! His whinig starts off as a really high pitched one under his breath, and eventually gets louder and louder.

People told me he would grow out of whining but he doesnt seem to be getting any better. Its driving me absolutely mad. our other dog used to whine a bit but when i disciplined her she would stop, but the discipling didnt stop him.

I have tried ignoring him. Spraying him with water. hitting him. telling him to stop. the pet corrector spray.

Please help me!

Shock collar, or give him an OBE.

the sister to your pup is in season at the moment and the father is exactly the same high pitched bloody whinge but he only does it when a bitch is in season as hes dieing to get his leg over a good roar at him to shut up usually does the trick, the mother to the pups is a different kettle of fish you would never know she was there so it must be a like father like son thing ;)

Been discussing this with 6pack, who is, in my opinion, the Queen of Puppies and knows her stuff. I think you've got to get the pup used to being on his own and amusing himself. Try to find somewhere - a crate, room, whatever - to put him in and give him something to do. One of those Kong toys, stuffed with some really tasty food, or a big old butcher's bone or whatever. You will have to leave him and let him cry till he stops, and when he does go tell him he's a good boy. Then repeat the process and increase the length of time you leave him. Keep going till he gets it. He will only learn by being ignored - shout and he's getting attention, hit him and he's getting attention ... you get the idea. None of that will sort him unless he already has an understanding that winging isn't going to get him anything at all.

A shock collar probably wouldn't do much other than make him nervous in these circs, so I'd give it a miss.

It takes a lot to take out the quirky little ways of anything with a russel in it. Especially a male. You may find you have to up your discipline beyond what you think is reasonable to get a result.

But i do like the idea that blackpack came up with though, can see that having some effect.
