Vaccinating your own dogs.....

I know many lads and lasses do their own vacinatintions.

Firstly please don’t come on this thread telling me to get up the vets as my dogs are all done.

 

This thread is for experienced people to give me some advice on how often they vaccinate their working dogs.

 

It’s not about saving a few quid it’s about what has worked for you and your belief to be a good vaccination programme.

 

I’ve read quite a lot of stuff saying that you can over vaccinate and do the dog’s immune system not much good by over loading the system.

 

Some say that it is better to give a dog one set of jabs or jab and let the dog build up from there on its own system, I kind of lean towards this practice but I would like to hear some of you experienced dog peoples opinions.....

Many people I know get the initial puppy jabs and then just the one booster, I also know folks who boost every couple of years. Personally I doubt the need for annual boosters if the dog gets out and builds up a natural immunity bit I get mine done yearly as we had possible plans of leaving these isles and didn't want any complications, also most kennels won't touch you without a full vaccination card.

i do same...pup jabs, then 1 year booster. However with the 3 that go ratting my vet does a lepto booster every 2 years.

i did the initial lot of vacinations and i dont bother with them after that. thats how all the bloke who showed me do it. never known them to have a problem. only bugger is the kennels wont touch them without card from vets. its getting real pin now as well im finding to get the jabs

I used to have mine done every year ... but now I have different ideas about that. Now my dogs have the puppy jabs and that's it.

 

Tho now I'm starting to wonder about this lepto business and weather or not they need that booster more often. The vet I use at the moment won't do booster jabs if you miss your annual "due date" from the puppy jabs

 

So, how prevalent is lepto then? And is it worth boosting every two years?

My dogs (and cats!) had the initial jag and then booster.

 

As they never go to kennels, never travel anywhere and stay at home (200 acres) - they don't go to shows. We don't bother. But we are in Shetland so I don't know what the prevalence of all these diseases are around here. Few dogs come on the premises either.

 

I do know, however, that no kennels will touch them if you want to go on holiday.

There is a blood test you can have done to check your dogs immunity. I personally have the pups done and then every few years they get a booster. people dont always realise that the dog builds its own immunity after the first puppy injections. Also with working dogs, their immunity is often alot better than average because they are regularaly exposed to pathogens, germs/mud/dirt and this all helps to prime their immune systems.

i have a good relation ship with 2 vets and both advised me the same.jab them once ie 2 bottles not 4 then on the first year after that then after that dont bother as dont need it and its all about money,i do allsorts with myn and never had any probs.

theres an issue over what the vaccinations cover , depending on what your vet uses (several different manufacturers of the vaccines market individual doses and different combinations of the jabs) will reflect in what work your dog does, as some dont cover all of the five or so variations of the lepto, and i suspect that most nonrural vets only use a vaccination to cover the most prevelant issues in their local area inc the usual parvo etc. its worth asking the name of the drugs and doing a little research even just for peace of mind. most of them are available from the us without to much trouble.

i do our dogs with the 7 in 1 jab and 3 years later i do a lepto booster and thats it never had any problems
