Short Shots...

Everyone is pre-occupied with long shots... 50yards+ with a sub 12ft/lbs rifle but what's the closest you've been able to get to your game?

 

What's your fieldcraft like?

 

The reason I ask is that I know a guy that hunts with Weihrauch HW45. Yes. A 6ft/lbs pistol in .22. Mocked by many 'hunters' for not having the latest gear, heckled for not using Realtree. He'll sit in fields for hours stalking his bunnies, using the available cover and his home made camo. He can get as close as 20 feet to his quarry, although he's claimed closer. I know this because I accepted his invite and I've watched him do it while sat in a comfortably heated Landy, using night vision.

 

Sure he doesn't come out with massive bags of buns... but that's not what he's about. He loves the stalk and will spend hours getting close. Like real f*****g close!

 

I'm lucky if I can get within 20 yards!

 

So this is one for the field masters rather than the snipers.

Once I shot a rat at 10 feet with a Diana mod5 pistol

Sitting on a heap of fire wood waiting for hours till it came out , the rat finaly did, one shot and it was dead. I was 13 years old, and could never be so close to game since then, think I had luck that day.

closest i have got is 10ft! we were hiding in a bush waiting for the bunnys to come out and sure enough they came out two little baby ones started playing and chaesd over to where we were a shot each for me and my mate.

not sure if this counts but i was shooting pigeons in trees when i bent down for something in my hide i noticed a bunny sat 10 yards infront of me but then it did have mixie

Used to regulary shoot with a guy who used a 12ft lb Rapid 7, see the quarry..put him on point, and I swear he was trying to get close enough to club the thing to death, I would keep willing him to shoot, and all he ever did was try and get closer and closer until the quarry would scarper before he got the shot off. "**** **** what are you doing...why didn't you shoot him??"...all I ever got back was..."I was practicing my fieldcraft"!!!

if you stay still long enough they will get really close

i wait till theres loads out some come within 15 yards prob closer

if there out in the field im tight against the fence bushes i will wait so theres alot out then take the one closest to the fence the others freeze or run a bit to try get to cover most of the time a few come my way so i get couple more , then if theres still couple left just on edge of cover then i will settle my breathing take the long shot .

and if they get so close the scopes a blur i aim best i can ruff head shot take the shot , at this range he wont live for long .no mater . 177 or 22
