some advice please

Recommended Posts

hello,in need of some advice, i decided to go out for a few hours with the ferrets today,me and a friend returned to a bury we have taken a few from before, the dog marked a hole, and outside definite fresh poo was around the entrance of a couple holes,we laid some nets, sat back had a cuppa and put collars on the two hobs of mine,we enterd the ferrets ,and waited as quiet as possible.

few minutes go bye and the ferrets had poped out a few holes and returning in, working through, we had them down there for a long time but still nothing ,all in all, they were working through for a good half 30-45 min,

i am quite new too ferreting and have had a few,but with all the signs that the bury was occupied, why nothing?

were they not down there long enough?we were quiet, the rabbits wer'nt in the field,

could they be in a deeper part that the ferrets couldnt reach, any help/reasons would be appreciated

Your ferrets probably had them stopped up, with the arse end facing them. These take a lot of budging.

Next time, leave the flask alone, use your locater, mark the spots where they are not moving.

Then get that blade flashing!

You should only have to wait a couple of minutes top to be honest. An experienced ferret will leave a bury once it's empty. (only thing on it's mind is live rabbits.)

If an experienced ferret keeps going back down, and showing again, either the rabbit is stopped up, and he cannot get to the head, or the rabbit is giving it the run around.

If a ferret is in one place for a couple of mins, there is something there!

I have always found, enter the ferrets as soon as nets are set, so collar them up when you arrive at the permission or before you set off. Leave the flask for lunch and chuck your ferrets in quick so you give them a suprise. Also, if it was really really really wet ground then they may have been flooded out and moved off for a few days or been disturbed by something and shifted

cheers brimmer and will , i am returning tomorrow,i will take note of whats said and hopefully have better luck

What about this dog that marked the hole?has it been wrong before?or maybe you read it wrong??

Nout wrong with a cupa mate, just to let things settle down. P1

it could also be that someone else is ferreting the same areas as you, only sooner, once ferreted it normally takes a few weeks for rabbits to move into an empty warren, so a set that looks in use, may well have been ferreted days or hours earlier

as stated, leave the flask for midday, or have it before you leave home, net up and get the ferts down, if your quite, you can hear the rabbits giving the distress call, by thumping their rear feet, if no thumping or bolts after 20 minutes, move on

to be honest i could of read it wrong,it sniffed at the hole were there was poo and give me this look,as if too say go on then,i have only been a few times and so far she has been right, also if i do return tommorow will they still be there, or will it be a wasted jouney, will they move on after a ferret has been down there? and no one has ferreted it, i am sure off, as it is a good friends land in full view of his house

cheers rich
