spiritofold 0
I've seen posts on the net saying that normal tinned puppy food aint that brilliant for your dog, that it contains god knows what and is bad for a developing lurcher, bones etc!? I'd love to know peoples views on this and what food stuff you feed your lurcher/puppy and how often is best? Be gratefull for your thoughts Andy Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Tinned food is very poor nutritionally, many brands are upto 70% water. Personally I have fed raw for many years and its the only way I will continue to feed. When I used to rear pups on dry the only one I liked was Beta puppy. Look in the health section as the debate has been done several times............ Quote Link to post

donk 12
Yep apparently raw meats are the best, use a dry complete myself, normally connollys redmills for greyhounds. Dogs look alright on it,its easier than raw, just scoop a bowl full out of the bag and put it down for them. 15kg bag does me for nearly a month @ £12 or so a bag. I dont measure it or nowt, just fill the bowls and put it down,my dogs dont greed, just eat what they want and leave the rest. Quote Link to post

spiritofold 0
When you say "raw" do you litterally mean raw meat, like raw chicken and raw steak, or more like mince? Quote Link to post

spiritofold 0
Cheers for the info! I know the dogfood question probably gets asked alot, i just want to start off on the right tracks! Looking around at various bits of info across this forum and the net, imany dog owners think tinned food, and many mixers are just full of rubbish and dont really do their dogs any good. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me though Really appreciated! Andy Quote Link to post
Back Stabbath 1
Yep deffo raw. Spiritofold, raw chicken, raw steak, raw mince, its all good. Tinned food up to 70% water simoman? Man I've seen 81% water! And they still have the cheek to call it "complete". Your dog will bloody die if you feed him on that crap alone! The best is raw meat (turkey, chicken, rabbit, beef, whatever) plus some grated raw veg like carrot. I give the odd apple too. Raw eggs, also great. Some people give cottage cheese, which is good, but dogs don't need dairy, its not natural to them, so avoid feeding it a lot. Big raw bones are a must too. (not too many tho) Barley can be good (cooked), but its not natural for dogs to eat grain so not good in large amounts. Dogs don't need carbs anyway. Table scraps are good with other food, as long as your not a fast food freak. Don't feed the dog too much protein foods until its past the lanky and akward growing stage, or the muscles will develop faster than the bone, causeing bone and joint problems. Feed a high quality 'adult' dry food along with some meat and veg. You need to learn how to understand food labels spiritofhold. Avoid anything that contains the following words/phrases - "derivitives of vegetable origin" "derivitives of animal origin" "BHA and BHT" "EU permitted antioxiants, colourings and preservatives" Especially avoid colourings - they are totally uneccessary and damaging to health. "Derivitives of animal origin" is not meat. They can't even call it meat because its so far removed! Its hooves, lungs, skin etc. that has been rendered to nothingness. Heres a useful page explaining what the terms actually mean - http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients I would recommend a high quality "real food" dog food with a protein content no higher than 20-21% for the time being. Something like adult Burns food, Timberwolf Organic, Canidae Natural, EVO, Solid Gold, if you can get those where you are. James Welbeloved is a good food too, and probably more widely available. Pedigree, Gain, Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin are not great foods, esp. not Pedigree. They are ok for feeding and adult sometimes, but I would not raise a pup on them. Just bear in mind my words/phrases to avoid when looking at foods. Some dogs are given whole rabbits, which is great, the most healthy and natural diet you could give a dog. Don't give too much carbs, dogs manufacture their own glucose from protein and fats. Good luck! Edited December 6, 2008 by Back Stabbath Quote Link to post
