Tyla 3,179
My bitch started coughing after a run today, its a dry cough almost a retch and shes doing it alot. There is nothing stuck in her throat or mouth and her breathing is normal until she coughs. i am just bringing her back to fitness after an injury and the run was an accident that just got up in front of her. Does anyone have any ideas? is it possible she strained herself running?

Tyla 3,179
could be kennel couth (give her some honey) Thats what we were thinking but just watched a load of examples on you tube and its different. its not persistant. Shes is sleeping quite happily then wakes up coughs four of five times then seems ok but does it every 5 or 10 mins.
labsnlurchers 39
Theres different severities of kennel cough and if the dog has only just started it may get worse with time. Just give it cough medicine and see how it goes for a couple of days, if its getting worse id seek professional advise

skycat 6,174
I would say that it's far more likely she has over run herself slightly. when the breathing is laboured over a period of time (as in running hard when slightly unfit) the throat gets sore, plus there will be some phlegm coming up even when no infection present. This will cause a cough just like you describe. The trick is to get them galloping a fair bit before they actually chase something: gets the lungs back in to working mode, rather than just light work then full on running something that keeps on going and going. Dogs can also breathe in fur, bits of grass, debris etc when they're running, particularly if they are hard up the a*se of what ever they are running: stuff gets kicked up by the quarry's hind feet. This can make them cough for a couple of days until they have coughed the debris up. An old time remedy was to smear the dogs throat (inside!) with a lump of goose fat! It worked. Try giving the dog a spoonful of honey to swallow: helps to line the throat, relieve soreness and is also a natural antiseptic.

(skycat) I would agree with skycat running unfit will often cause a little inflammation of the airways which usually settles after a day or so or in worst case scenarios heart failure. If there isn't an improvement after 24hrs then think of Kennel cough.
