I had her out and she run a rabbit along a sheep wire fence and took a tumble into the fence. I checked her over and she had snapped a nail cleanly off and she started limping then holding it up. I put her on the lead straight away and went back the car. When i got home i cleaned her foot with salt water and carried on cleaning it for a few days. It was 2-3 weeks before she was using her foot again just in the garden. After this i started doing some road work with her for a few days but when i thought things were ok i let her off the lead to have a run and she put a rabbit up and run it and lost it but she came back holding the foot up again so it was back on the lead and back home again for rest. I gave her another 1 weeks rest and she still is not right. I took her to the vets yesterday to see what this swelling was above the toe and he checked it over and said she has not broke her toe but he was unsure about the swelling above the toe he said to take her home for rest only and see if it clears and if in the meantime it bursts get a hot poultice on it but if it don't clear she will need an x-ray what do you guys think as x-rays dont allways find. Now when i think back about it the bitch must of caught the nail on the fence which in turn has pushed the outside to out until the nail snapped. The ooutside toe is floppy and lifeless thats why i thought she had broke it but the vet assures me its not broke. undisputed 1,664 Posted December 4, 2008 Report Share Posted December 4, 2008 Sounds like it may have staved or bruised the toe.....Sometimes if its swollen the xray wont pick up on a break/fracture I would rest some more and continue to bathe in hot water. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

threbb 0 Posted December 5, 2008 Report Share Posted December 5, 2008 Dont mess about with it get it to a greyhound vet.The floppy one could be dislocated.If it aint rested for long enough it wont get better.It will probably need 6to8 weeks.You can find a greyhound vet from the nearest dog track. brock1 2 Posted December 5, 2008 Report Share Posted December 5, 2008 mine had the same sort of thing done by jumping 6 foot chain mesh fence could not find nowt rong with it. but he just was not running right & after a couse just use to lift his leg i asked a few local gryhound men i now & they sead it nite be tendon damage & gave me some bone radial & told me to scrub the dogs toe every other day for 2 weeks then see what it run like. that worked for mine but you are better of getting some one that nows what there doing to have a look first. i hope she is well sone & doing that she was breed for mate. Any help greatly appreciated-by the way its a bull x just a follow up for all who offered advice-i went to see a greyhound vet i used a few years ago and he said it is a dislocated toe which has caloused up he said she needs 6 weeks of with lead exercise only-he said not to worry nature will fix it with rest and i asked should i carry on the hot and cold water he said yes to carry on. so thanks to everyone for the helpfull advice-if anyone needs this blokes number pm me he is fantastic with greyhounds and lurchers he can tell you whats wrong just by the way the dog walks-cheap as chips-he is in bolton area Quote Link to post Share on other sites
