Help me please.....got to catch a rabbit!

Recommended Posts

hi,

im in the army and i work in germany. were i work is only used during the day and deserted at night and is home to lots of wildlife, rabbits, hares wild bore, deer etc.

after reading some very good articles on this website i have bought some snares and made some of my own and i have been setting them up now for a week or so. heres my problem. after nearly 2 weeks of setting 20 snares up every night i havnt caught anything. its become a bet between the lads now wether ill ever catch one and its costing me.

i set them up as described on this site, but still no rabbits. were i am its very hard to establish the beats, its more a speradic wooded area with old warehouses and buildings. i cant find many burrows, it seem they live under the older buildings and they seem to run around without staying to a particular area. my question is has anyone got any top tips when the signs of obvious beats are missing. also with it being winter now is it still a good time to try and snare or should i give up till the spring?

one last question, it is not possible for me to have an air rifle on camp, but i was debating in on trying to lamp a rabbit or sneak up on, and is it possible to kill catch with a good hunting cat a pult? anyone have any experiance with any of the above.

i know i have asked a lot but realy any help or advice would be good,

cheers

Olly.

Are you reading the right posts and are you following the information given correctly??

The posts made by a good few members ie woodga & snareman to name a few are spot on, follow their advice and you cant go wrong. You will also find topics pinned at the top of this section.

There is a wealth of usefull information available if you look. If you cant find what you want use the search button.

If you have read the relevant topics and posts and followed them well by instruction, but still not having any luck. You need to try again harder or give up.

Hunting and trapping is not done just for a bet. You a member of the armed services should know better and have better respect and understanding of what you are doing.

Drop you out of a plane in the middle of nowhere with no rations and a basic survival pack, it will be more than a bet.

Good luck in your search and good luck with the practice.

hi,

thanks for all the banter, however i am being serious, and i do have respect for my quarry. its not just for a bet, i want to prepare and eat any rabbits caught, but you know what mates are like they are taking the piss.

i am following all advice on the web site, however as i have stated the main problem seems to be the lack of beats, although there is definatly rabbits here.

the main questions i require answering are; is it still a good time to hunt rabbits (its very cold over here now)

is a catapult a viable option?

thanks again.

Id suggest a live catch rabbit trap, you can get them from e bay, leave it where you have seen the rabbits, with grated carrot inside and around, prehaps with the door fixed open, carry on baiting for a few nights, then set the trap,

Look for runs ie tracks, sometimes there are no easily seen beats. Go in the last half hour of light as the low shadows make the runs more obvious. Once you see a run just set the snare on it as if it were a beat. good luck, ian. Ps the winter is the best time but frosty weather is not good.
