Big bald beautiful 1,231
a dog , in your case a corgi goes into the bushes, grass, tree etc and hunts out and chases or catches rabbits.its harder work with just one dog but its more for fun then a serious way of taking rabbits. Guest Countryboyo
Bushing is where dogs follow their nose into bushes, rushes, long grass, ditches, and rough scrub in general. Your corgi may work he may not but if you take him out with an experienced dog chances are that he will. It is unlikely that you will catch anything unless you have a fast dog like a whippet or lurcher. Quote Link to post

Guest lurcherboy2008
i do alot of bushing mate, i use terriers and basically they just nose down and into the bush where a rabbit or maybe a fox (pre ban hunting) entered cover and then push/drive them out of there. i hunt thick and thin hedgerows, gorse, fern you name it and you'd be suprised what rabbits can lay up in, iv seen plenty of dogs hit rabbits out of anything say for instance a patch of gose 1 foot in diameter or whatever but iv seen rabbits come out of them iv seen them been nocked up from log piles, rubbish dumps you name it, its a good way of hunting its fun for a start and you can get big numbers if the lurcher dont pick the rabbit off as it tried breaking a field or tries to go patch of cover to cover then usually they go to ground and the terrier marks them, when my terriers were younger they use to catch alot more now the 1 is 5 yar old and the other 3 but when they were around a year old both were unsteady and quick through the cover this can result in over running the line and getting excited but they also seem to somehow catch alot more, now theyre steady or shall i say steadyer they usually only catch the ones that sit tight and try to make a break at the very last minute, bushing is great its nice to see the terriers do a bit drive a good few rabbits to ground and then tie them up for a while to ferret them, sometimes if the terrier or whatever you use for bushing dont mess nets up or dont want to kill the ferret or kill the rabbit whilst its in the net then leave them off the lead but i always collar them up and tie them to something, great sport i love it Quote Link to post

pointer 543
do yourself a massive favour and stick a locator collar on your dog as terriers that dont mess around with rabbit holes might find themselves an occupied fox earth weather you want to hunt that quarry or not. infact it should be inevitable sooner or later. maybe a corgi wont but a terrier taken bushing regularly is going to find fox to ground.ive seen it said on these forums that its not a problem if you know the area your hunting................i find that strange as a fox can open up a rabbit earth overnight and many places wont even look like a fox earth.bushing is good fun and ive spent years doing it but it does have it dangers. COMPO 54
Brecon Bushing is as described above, un-regulated hunting with small packs of dogs, usually terriers, sometimes small hounds and spaniels, sometimes lurchers/whippets etc.....what ever you have take them let them chase and hunt rabbits stand back and watch! It can be complimented with longnets or shotguns to catch/shoot game as it breaks cover and its a good way to exercise small dogs without walking miles yourself ideal area's are bramble covered hedge's or any otehr cover as rats and rabbits will inhabit and teh dogs will eventually realise they can follow the scent/chase the rabbit through teh cover Quote Link to post

stevemac 442
New a fella that had a small pack 3 bassetthounds and to corgis he used them as mentioned above in large blackberry bushes he shot most of what the dogs chased out, but every now and then the dogs would get up on a fox in the brambles, thats when the corgis came in handy as they had a lot more bite then the hounds and took care of the bisness good luck with your pack go and have some fun. stevemac Quote Link to post
brecon3 13
thanks to those who gave constructive advice to pmarsh10 yes i am for real just tell me how old are you? im 15 i have no income do you not think i would have got a dog sutible for the task if i could i have asked mum if i could get a lurcher but she said that 2 dogs is enough she only just lets me have a ferret and that i have to pay for vets bills, food, cages the works my self i asked a genuine question and from all but you i got a decent answer telling me to give it a go this is a forum for hunters to gain more experieced hunters i asked a question to see if it would work as i have never tryed it not wanting to fall out but if you dont have any constructive advice to give dont post rant over thanks brecon Edited December 3, 2008 by brecon3 Quote Link to post
pointer 543
it wasnt aimed at you, id collar every terrier up,when bushing more than one terrier can go to ground and it can turn fecking terrible. the b and f is a great bit of kit and lets you know if more than one dog is still kicking about.ive had a dog go to ground on a few occasions and the locator has found the dog no-where near where i would have been looking with the old mk1. plus the b and f collar is waterproof,i used to ptfe tape the old deben threads up and cover the whole thing in insulating tape but if bushing around rivers etc water nearly always got in and killed the batteries. bushing is good fun but very dodgy.i lost a bitch a few years back when she hunt a fox line to a water filled drain.it took a long time to find her as i only had the old deben one which i had to fix to drain rods but even though we covered the thing in bags and tape etc the batteries didnt last long.the last couple of holes stank of fox and we recovered my dead dog which was marked up.an extremelly sad time and i still feel very guilty about taking her out to that place.i have no excuse................i could make out that it was just a tragic incident but lets face it any terrier worth the name is going to go looking for fox if taken out bushing. there is only one place locally i can take my terrier bushing feeling fairly safe that nothing is going to happen and in weather like this with foxes going to ground i wouldnt take him out.dont get me wrong i dont always have a collar on a terrier but thats because i never learn and should know better. oh and a few times whilst ratting ive had terriers go into bale stacks and bolt fox out so maybe ratting terriers should be collared up aswell ive spent loads of days running rabbits and a few fox about in cover but now i just use a pointer and the lurchers.that way when a fox brakes cover i can just watch it rather than panicking about bloody terriers.i only used to run into about a dozen foxes to ground a season and most of these quickly bolted but looking back perhaps i was lucky to only lose one terrier Quote Link to post
