i have been useing mk3 for 2 years not had to use it much but when i have works well but very loud i put some tape over the holes were the beeps come out but then if you want to find your ferret it is not some thing to worry about my mate is just old and miserable

A little bit of practice in the garden, away from anything electrical and you'll be fine with it, don't believe the hype about them being crap because they are really good, you'll find this when you use them.

What is the difference between the mk3 and the mk3m ?

i think, the mk3m collars turn themselves off magnetically, unlike the normal ones which need batteries taking out. Also, i think you can scan them to turn the collars off. and also they are waterproof

There's a magnetic switch in the collars, you use the tip of the locator which has a magnet in it to switch the collars off and on, that's just the MK3M collars.
