scope for cz.17hmr?

Recommended Posts

i'd go with a higher mag mate, once you start reaching out for longer range bunnies and crows you'll be glad you did. i've got a 6-18x50 on mine and use it at 18 mag in daylight much better for shot placement. but whatever you decide buy as good glass as you can afford.

justbought a second hand cz.17hmr just wondering wat size scope to put on it bin told a 3x9x56 would be right ?

hi big john. good choice on the rifle. i have a cz 452 .17hmr. there deadly. i would go for a bigger scope. 3x9x56 is not big enough in my eyes. i have a 6.5x20x50 deben hawke nighteye. i know some might say 20 mag is too big but no it isnt why make it harder for yourself. them cz,s are killers up to 150-200 yards. and with 9 mag you would struggle to see a clear target.

Used a 6 - 24 x 40 on my .22 for years with no issues. Ok no great shakes for lamping , but I didn't do much? Never felt over scoped.

Just set up with a .22 and .17hmr and gone for a 3 -12 x 40 for the .22, and a 4 - 16 x 40 for the hmr. I did buy a 6 - 24 x 44 but found it over balanced both rifles, so it's gone. :o

This subject always gets very personal and the only real answer is to get what you are comfortable with, not what anyone else uses.

I personally like "light" rifles and medium scopes, 3-12x44 on my .22LR and 4-16x44 on my HMR and WMR. The majority of the time I run them on 6x, even out to 200 yards, but sometimes crank it up to 8x. Target shooting on the range at 200 yards I may just go to 10 or 12 on an exceptional day!! Even on a good day with a decent Bipod at 16-18-20 or more you will get shake! I tend to use the bigger magnification to simply scan the horizon and then go for a walk ;)

But each to their own...if it works for you that is all that matters!!

Hello there,

One thing I have found with my cheapo Hawk Nite-eye 3.5-10x50 is that the point of aim shifts a little depending on which magnification it's set on.

I zero at 10 x mag, and if I shoot on 6 x the POI moves up about a quater of an inch at the same 50 yards.

Most of the time this makes no difference as I only really use 6x on closer ranges when obviously I have to hold under up to 0.4 of an inch anyway to allow for the path of the bullet. Plus, a quater of an inch when aiming for a target the size of a bunny's head is fairly insignificant.

I'm sure that better glass won't do this.

Cheers

Steve

Yep, thats I was feeling, but have never been tempted to turn down to lower mag except at point of darkness. Could be a bit like the rock scene analogy, you know, Marshall amps that go up to 11 :clapper:
