if your happy going out on your own and getting little or nothing thats your choice a lot of lads is like this there lurcher is 90% pet and 10% working dog they maybe have a walk round a few fields on a saturday or lamp it a couple of nights a week and there happy whatever they come home with as long as its not injuries lol theres nothing wrong with this if its what you want to do and its got nothing to with with wheather you like to do it on your own or with mates, but if your dogs shit you will get less slaggings off if your hunting alone lol. but a lot of lads want a good dog that is tested hard and performs to its best to get a dog like this you have to get out there and put a lot of game infront of the dog to see its good and bad faults and if theres more bad than good then the saturday lads would probably keep the dog and kidd themselfs on they dont really mind cos there not out much and there only pleasing themselves but the lads who are honest about what they want out of a dog will not put up with anything less than thebest, things like yapping dogs or stopping at fences not giving 100% being too slow or not a good courser the best thing to do with dogs that arent up to the standards is find them a pet home where they wont be past about or put them down. any lad who says he has never had a dog thats not came up to standard must have been a very lucky fella or hes telling porkies we have all had a bad dog its wheather or not we can put up with the dogs bad faults and live with them or not. the problem with lurchers today is there is too many saturday lads breeding from there dogs that have not caught very much they should stick to what they do and leave breeding lurchers to the lads who are testing there dogs to the full then there would be less shite about!!!

Spot on... ...

Frank.

I agree with everything you say, as frank says you have it spot on. Its a shame you cant enforce breeding restrictions with lurchers.

There's not to many people in here do the amount of work with their dog's that they claim. If you dont have work commitments then fine but I'd bet my mortgauge on the vast majority only being out 2-3 times a week. Now if we look at the logic of this statement of 100% dog's...how many are out there doing it night after night especially on charlie not many I would wager. Dog's that see a lot of work inevitabley get injured and need time to recover. How many of these 100%'s give that time to their dog's to fully recover....again not many. It never ceases to amaze me the amount times I have seen threads advertising adult dog's for sale or owners claiming his/her dog just wasn't up to the task so they had to go. To me they are the jibbers not the dog. To many folk think of lurchers/terriers/ferrets as commodities to be passed on dumped or killed because they dont come up to their owner's standards. My dogs stay with me no matter what, old age, debilitating injuries and amputee's have all remained with me till they died or could be found caring homes. And before the "pest controllers" pipe up (seems everyone is a pest controller these days) I understand the logic behind that but the vast majority of folk in here appear to place a great deal of emphasis on their dogs doing charlie and nothing else. To define your dog by whether or not he can do a fox is severly limiting it's overal potential in my view. Dog's are/can be extremely versatile given the opportunity but sadly very few are given the chance to show or reach their potential. In my opinion some owners Jibb far quicker than their dogs. :aggressive: Maybe if we could shoot the owners for jibbing we would have less shite out there as someone so elequently put it.

It depends on your defination of a good worker mate. Most any dog given time and patience will give you sport of one kind or another, I accept not all dog's are suited to bigger game but it doesn't make them any less deserving of fair treatment. Most folk I hope would agree that a dog should be in it's second season before tackling charlie or as close to damn it. How many of these type of threads has there been were someone pipes up my dog did it's first fox at 6 -7 mnths or has started on them before theyre a year old. Then suddenly the dog takes a bleaching and the enevitable spew happens followed closely by the free to good home add or worse the long one way walk into the wood. To many folk are in to much of a hurry to be out there and not prepared to put the work in. You get the odd dog that comes through but these are not as common as folk make out and imo are the exception rather than the rule. How many more dogs have to pay the price before common sense prevails?

If a dog has little or no prey drive, refuses to run things(jacks) any amount of time wont make it better! Yes some dogs take longer to enter than others, but if a dog is entered correctly for its breeding and the quarry you choose to run and still is no good, do you be sentimental and keep it?

I personally wouldnt keep it if i had done everything right and tried everything to help it succeed but i would be sentimental and i would ensure that it had a good home where it suited the requirements of the owner and where it would see out its days and wouldnt be bred from. I do think that if everything is done properly then the chances of this happeining are extremely low.

I've never had a dog with no "prey drive". Any dog given the proper encouragement will chase quarry. Some take longer than others. I'm not sure what you mean by entered correctly for it's breeding....do you mean if it comes from working parents? In my own personal opinion a high percentage of dog's not being fit for purpose can be traced back to something the owner did or didn't do during the learning process. And I include myself in that as well as I could fill a book with mistakes I've made but I try to learn from them.
