Diesels foot?

Recommended Posts

It's difficult to tell from the pictures which foot it is, so whether it's an inside or outside toe. One of mine had a shortened toe, an inside toe on a front foot. The reason for it was that he'd had his dew clews removed as a new born pup (very badly, by a vet, who'd crushed his pastern in the process and damaged the bones!)

I'd recommend cutting that claw - it's obviously not getting worn down.

I'd say he has 'sprung' the toe: that is, damaged/stretched the ligaments that stretch and contract to allow it to move as the dog moves. Claws usually grow like that when the toe is flattened: does the claw point upwards when the dog is standing still? Nowt you can do about it but keep the claw as short as possible so he doesn't catch it on something.

if it's always been like that it's called a "high toe", some terrier lines carry it and shouldn't be bred as it passes quite easily on genetically

Yep we get a hell of a lot of working springers in with the same. Never seen it in a running dog, and it shouldn't see because if there one thing a running dog needs above all is good feet.

Hows the dog bred?

Its a outside toe on the front right leg of the front foot, we did try to cut it weekly, but the nail is really brittle for some reason to, the rest are fine but for some reason that one kept cracking and was even cutting his quick, so we just done road work with him for a while and its stayed at that length, the end of it just touches the floor when he walks.

Yeah as above just keep on top of it and give it a trim, as long as the dog is ok and healthy no worries! :thumbs:Any chance of a pic of the dog in full?

Yep anytime, although he isn't a worker, and where we walk him he has to be muzzled as the farmer wants him to be.

Hes the brindle one.

We see alot of GSD's with brittle nails, most have poor feet aswell, too loose at the pasterns and hocks many almost walking on there stoppers and hocks with all their weight on there heals nails not being worned down. Its crying shame to see dogs bred like this. :(

He came from a really crap 'breeder' we got told that he was Whippet X Grey, but the dog that got brought out as his dam ignored him, and he ignored her, after asking a few questions we got told the truth, that his mum rejected him, and the owner of the dam was going to leave them to starve, so this man got the litter of 11, and kept them in his back garden since they were three weeks old, and was just bringing them up so that the next time his bitch was in heat he could mate her with the breeders dog, he had a arrangement with the real breeder that if most survived he could breed his bitch to any of his dogs, and even asked if he could have my Saluki Greyhound bitch for breeding, it was all real messy, but I do feel sorry for people who brought his litter mates thinking that they were Whippet X Grey.

Have you tried cutting the nail straight after a good walk in the wet? The nail will be softer and much easier to cut.

We've tried after he has been swimming but he gets nervous of the nail clippers going near that nail, but will let me cut the rest, he has a habit of watching the nail clippers when I am cutting his nails :(

One of mine has been a real pain with me cutting her nails. She only weighs about 22kg but my partner and I can't hold the little "treasure", she wriggles so much. So I've really worked with her, gradually built up her confidence with me just touching her nails with the clippers, then giving her a treat etc. It's been a slow business, but now I can cut her nails without her being a drama queen :)

We just do 15 mins of walking on pavement with him a day, and his nail is still like that, hes only 26 kg himself, but he can be a pain in the bum, we are still getting him use to strangers at 2 and a half, so when we go to the vets we always ask the vet about his nail being long, although he has never gone into detail about the name and any info so thanks everyone, but as he is still a very nervous boy in other things I don't really want to push him for his nails, if you get what I mean?
