Has anyone any idea why there doesn t seem to be as many off these around. Are bull, collie and beds better? Talkin to my dad a dog man for 40+ years and although a saluki fan hardwork as they are he talks off most havin deerhound grey to grey as the norm when he was new to the game and speaks highly off them. Any opinions on this out there as i m on the lookout for a pup over the next 12 mnths cheers Danny :D

Pure fashion, deerhounds went out as Collie crosses came in to fashion thanks to the books by P*****r and his mate H*****k's commercial breeding programme, then saluki crosses came in and later bull crosses - although I think that these seem to be on their way out a bit now. All crosses have their enthusiasts. I have tried all of these and come back to the deerhound cross as my first love although I may very well get a pure bred deerhound bitch as my next dog. A lot depends on what you want a dog for, if it's just rabbiting then they are not the best dog for you, similarly if its only coursing then go with one of the line bred saluki blooded coursing dogs, if it's only lamping get a Minshaw bred dog. If you want an all rounder capable of taking anything from a rabbit to some of the biggest game around or if you are a big game specialist then a well bred deerhound cross will probably be perfect for you and as an added bonus is likely to have a better temperament and looks than any of the alternatives.

Give it another 10years danny and who knows....................deerhounds may make a come back.........As nightwalker said its fashion...........there's nowt as fickle as lurchermens tastes..........some find a X which suites them others never do, and can be looking for most of their hunting life...........it doesn't really matter though...........We all want slightly different things from our respective canine companions........thats why we have such an array of different dogs up & down the country...........as for getting a pup........think what you want it for, look for a 'type' YOU like, then go for something along them lines.........above all enjoy the pup & don't put yourself or it under loads of pressure............Good luck with your 'quest' :good::good: & ENJOY

What about bitzas? There's good ones. bad ones and indifferent ones same as with any other type of longdog - I would look for the breeder who consistently turns out high performing bitzas. As for the EDRD forum well it's still bumping along, and I'm glad to be the only Nightwalker on the patch!

Give kane on here a pm about deerhound crosses he loves them & has worked them for many a year from up in the highlands of scotland at the reds to down in the fens at hare give him a shout he willbe more than pleased to have a craic with you ;)

Firstly good to see your still posting mik.

Now dannycos,if your oldman worked dogs for forty years and chose salukis over Deerhoundxs then ask him why.You say he started out with Deerhounds and liked them very much yet he still changed to salukis.I would profit from his experiance and ask him some questions.

If you want a dog for hunting lamping etc a Deerhoundx might be just the thing but dont get a dog just to be different make sure your getting one that gets the job done,Deerhound or otherwise.JMO

My dad didn t own a deerhound x but his good mate bred his own line for 20 years (now deceased). He had a saluki and purely on daytime hares on moorland and fields his faired better although not as good an alrounder. I believe sheep were its biggest floor. He says himself he wouldn t have another. My current dog is a saluki x grey with a grey x bed x grey and has been a cracker but going on 8 rabbits are enough.

I chose saluki in this cross for good feet as living on the end off the pennines theres some rough ground. She s 25" and spot on but feel areasonably small deerhound x could also do well round here on 50/50 rabbits and Hares. Does this sound sensible? Any advice once again gratefully recieved

Cheers Danny

Deerhounds were bred to run on moorland and some of the roughest ground around and most have very good feet, I have had far less foot trouble with deerhound crosses than with most other types of lurcher when run on rough ground. I have decent bags of rabbits at night with deerhound crosses of 30" and a little more, my current bitch is 29" and has just completed her first season (she is 17 months now) and done fine on rabbits and 'big rabbits' as well as much larger stuff. You can get first crosses down to about 26" or so and 2nd crosses are more variable -but one of the reasons some of us choose a deerhound cross is that we need a larger dog with the size, weight and power for large quarry that's also going to be sound and have a good temperament.

australian roo dogs/staghounds primairly have greyhound and deerhound, bit of wolfhound, borzoi, and also some other breeds, ive heard of ACD being used in the old timers, depending on how they were hunting

having said that the primary quarry was roos, foxes and hares, they didnt have large fields to work in back then, a lot of running from what ive read about was in semi open terrain, a lot of bush(you call it woods there, our woods are very different to what we have tho)

a dog that could navigate this terrain was essential, possibly through this they got the dogs that came to be, sicne dogs with no "bush sense" would of been staked or crippled, therefore not bred from, so i guess one could say that through selective breeding they came up with the best dog for their times.

roodogs/staghounds are still used today

anyway, has not much to do with u guys, just a little bit of history for ya :D
