'good reason'?

Recommended Posts

Seems to me you have had a lot of good advice from several helpful people here, perhaps try and look out a local rifle club and try to get some experienc/advice/practice there.

You will find the vast majority of shooters/clubs are happy to help and advise on not just the shooting, but glass, ammo, legalities etc etc etc..you may even make some contacts to take you out in the field.

I think you may have worked out by now getting a FAC these days for anything, let alone vermin control, is not that easy, every time you jump one hurdle there seems to be another in front of you!!

PS...I may have missed it but ...How old are you????

im 17 and 18 in a few months :). ive decided that il get an air rifle first, gain some experience and then apply for an fac in a year or so .

Just a few thoughts young fella,

You have age on your side but in terms of obtaining an FAC that can work against you, ie, age can indicate experience or sensibility, (clearly doesn't apply in my case as I am 55, not senile, just decidedly juvenile).

I applied for my 1st licences at age 30. I'd had at least 1 air rifle at anyone time since the age of 10. Also had a No3 and .410 shotgun as there was no licence in those days.

Anyway I thought the best way into an FAC was to apply for a SC 1st, much easier and difficult to refuse if you have a good record.

A year later I applied for the FAC and got it with few issues or questions. I think the experience side of it must be considered, so get an air rifle and learn how to shoot accurately and safely, apply for your SC now, get to a few clayshoots and in a years time you should be able to demonstrte the knowledge reqd to the FEO,

Take your time, ;)

My Thoughts on the most appropriate way.....

1. Join rifle club and learn safe use of fire arm.

2. Buy Air rifle straight away and learn the basics of field craft.

3. From being a keen and regular member at the rifle club you will find land to shoot your air rifle on.

4. A few months in and with some land to shoot, friends and experience with an air gun, apply for shotgun certificate.

5. Give it a few more months and apply for a variation for .22lr and .17hmr.

I have found the amount of land I have permission to shoot has snowballed and I am now having to turn down requests to 'shoot my bloody rabbits'

Good luck with it I really think you should go out and buy an air rifle straight away, I am often using mine on one farm where its the only suitable weapon and in my garden to shoot the fu***ng pigeons that poo in my pool !!!!

Good luck,

yeah ive decided that im going to buy an air arms s410 as soon as possible, get some land which shouldnt be hard as i know alot of people with farms. i think that i will then apply for a shot gun certificate a few months later. i cant wait to go out into the field :) to see if my stalking skills are up to scratch after spending years stalking river banks !

Without being funny, this will also show YOU, wether this is what you really want to do and if you are cut out for it...I know several people that can put hole on hole at 500 yards but when it comes to shooting a bunny at 30 yards they miss!!!

Re your comments about the river bank;

I take it this is angling?, my other passion.

The big issue comes along when compared to catching a 10lb chub or a 2lb dace, you are never going to get a 4foot bunny or a 3stone fox, get my drift?, it's a numbers or skill game, not targetting a single specemin. I'm sure someone knows what I'm ramblin' on about.

Take the advise given, it's good. :clapper:

um i think i get your drift  yes i was refering to angling which is my main passion, (ive been doing it since i was six)! i used to be into the size aspect of catching carp, trout, sewin and the like. now i just enjoy it for what it is; being where i love out in the countryside and doing what i love :). theres nothing better in my opinion than the open air and feilds.

im just looking forward to the challenge of hunting and eating the little blitters! as u can tell i love my food

and to welshdragon, thankyou for your comment and not thinking that im a fool. i certainly try my best to be knowledgeable when it comes to my passions but sometimes youve just got to ask.

Anyone who would think you a fool is the fool themselves  It's always much better to ask plenty of questions before you apply for anything like this  There's really really no need to apologise, we all started somewhere. Some were fortunate to have family and friends to show them the ropes, others aren't, that's the great thing about forums, the information and community they provide for us all ;)
