stubby 175
whats the best thing to keep tics away hay or straw ferrets pick up ticks when down the rabbit holes, if you get into the habit of de ticking them at the end of the days ferreting before putting them back in the hutch, you should'ent have to worry to much on the bedding, Quote Link to post
Cornio 0
"sucked from the host back into the it," think logically kay I know what you're trying to get at but Kay is right. The tick may carry an infection from another animal and the blood it sucks in will mix with this in the stomach. When you squeeze it, the blood it's just sucked up AND the infection it was initially carrying will go back into the bloodstream. Quote Link to post

I just dont think taking the risk is worth it if a tick picker does the job correctly , not just animals but humans also Quote Link to post
JPTfellterrier 65
when my dogs get ticks i burn them with a lighter (the tick not the dog) and they fall off the next day, my terrier managed to get 6 in one day once Quote Link to post
Malt 379
I can't beleive that people still follow old wives tales about removing ticks. F**k all your Vaseline, lighters, surgical spirit, etc, spend under a fiver on a pair of these, and you wont look back, guaranteed: Quote Link to post
Graham Nicholson 0
"sucked from the host back into the it," think logically kay If you blow on them so you can see them, properly then paint the little b-------s with nail vanish blow for a couple more seconds till dry, they will drop off dead, and they look pretty in pink. badgeroy 3
Dont use hay for bedding in the summer it overheats with the ferrets lying in it, ferrets then get overheated. Quote Link to post
magus69 0
Look Folks use the old methods at your peril I did!!. I aquired a tick while stalking I was aware of the dangers of infection by just pulling off the tick and leaving it's mouth parts behind to cause infection. What I wasn't aware of was if you stress a tick as Kay said it WILL regurgitate it's stomach contents back into it's host, this is exactly what happened to me after I covered the little ba***rd in vaseline. Unfortunately for me the tick was a carrier for Lymes disease (google it),I started off with a circular red patch where the tick had been,a few weeks after I started getting tired out very quickly and feeling generaly unwell, I just carried on best I could,a few more weeks and just walking round the block and I was done for. Went to the docs and he said I'd picked up some sort of virus and to take it easy for a day or two,I took his advice and then tried to get back to normal but was actually getting worse.I went back to the docs he sent me for blood tests everything they checked for came back ok. I got worse vision affected, kidneys affected, and ultimately a full blown stroke. It was only when I was in hospital that one of the specialists a Scotsman noticed the red patch on my shoulder and asked if I'd ever come into contact with a tick.I said I had and told him how I removed it (vaseline) he then ordered tests for Lymes disease and found I'd contracted it from the tick. This was almost 3 years ago now I'm still seriously affected by it,I wasn't allowed to drive for 8 months,my left side is still affected by the stroke (which was well over a year ago now)and I'm still getting well knacked after not doing a lot. I've only been back at work since september this year, I'm so glad I don't have a mortgage or I'd have lost the house. 1 Sodding tick + 1 wrong way of removal =my whole life turned upside down and 16 tablets a day to keep me going. Lymes disease will kill your ferret within days and won't take much longer to kill your dog,if your well fit and you get a correct diagnosis you may well survive as I have done but don't bank on it.
