Best doing it outside, boil the oil till its simmering then light it, reduce by half then put flame out by putting something over the top of the container to deprive the flame of oxygen. Moocher71 4,049 Posted February 21, 2022 Report Share Posted February 21, 2022 Me grandad caught goldfinches by liming ,caught a lot in his time and the old fellas used all kinds of ways even cutting chunks out of the soles of old boots/shoes and melt it down and smear it on perch and place it above the feeding station ,lot of birds died. Must be a right gutter that loosing what might be an outstanding goldie due to liming it's one of the reasons the old boys i knew never used it though setting a patch up could be risky if found. I was only young lad when I went with him on walks "trapping/poaching " he had good market for finches and I'm sure he lost many from liming but he had other ways of catching them . 2 Quote Link to post
Bird Catcher 95 Posted February 26, 2022 Report Share Posted February 26, 2022 Remember as a kid using lime on drop twigs, set at different angles depending on what birds you was after, also setting it on string lines, always cleaned up with charcoal or sometimes another ingredient was needed. Very easy to make lime, and have even seen a postman make instant lime out of a bundle of elastic bands !! Quote Link to post
