donk 12
My old bitch wouldnt touch a fox til she was about 3 years old not that i was bothered that much, after i got a second bigger dog,she became more confident and more competitive and took quite a few. Neither of my dogs has to be 'the biggest, the best, the fastest' . As long as they want to hunt thats good enough for me. Theres no wrong way or right way, just the way you choose. My young dog has caught loads of rabbits, then one day he decides to just run alongside them???? Wouldnt pick them up?? who knows what he was thinking? Kept him on the slip and let the bitch do the graft for a while, the dog soon changed his ways and started picking up again lol. I dont consider this to be 'jackin' its just the dog f@ckin about, just like young lads f@ck about. There are no instant winners, fair enough some dogs are sh@t compared to others, but its always going to be that way. When the little bitch didnt want to do fox we went rabbitting, ferretting and lamping, great sport. I know lads who want their dogs taking big stuff in their first year, and have the knowledge and ability to get that dog up to that standard, but i also know lads who are total messers and armchair hunters who like to talk the talk, but who in reality havent got a clue what theyre doing, lol. I used to be on here more than i was out with the dogs, not these days. Dogs learn f@k all when your sat on here, its a fantastic site, but you need to be out there doing your stuff, thats when the dogs learn. Good hunting all Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,020
Both retired due to injury.... One is 10 the other only 6. They will stay with me for life. If i am totally honest, life would be so much easier and cheaper without them. And i could have more healthy dogs which can actually work. But they deserve a good retirement for all the pleasure they have given me over the years....and still do. But what i wont do is wrap them in cotton wool, they are still allowed to run and chase and even occasionally catch and if the day came they cannot do that then i will make the descision to pts. Personally having seen retired lurchers in pet homes, it is absolute rubbish to say they suffer, or are not happy. Visit lurcher link (lurcher rescue) and see the extrememly unhappy dogs fast asleep on peoples sofas, running free on the beaches and chasing the odd rabbit. Imo people who think this are fooling themselves they are the only people who can look after a lurcher properly, and that the dog will pine away for the rest of their lives...rubbish! your dogs look in good nick for any age, spot on Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
Wilf how would you feel if the only person that was your whole world sent you to be killed then? Fair question Andy.........I personally dont belive that an animal knows what a gun is or what its purpose is, I dont think they know they are going to a vet for a jab..........so I dont really think its the same thing. As far as pictures are concerned, even if I did work my dogs, which I dont.........I wouldnt post anything on a public site like this........to many" billy big bollocks and want the world to know it", for my liking Cheers, W Edited November 28, 2008 by WILF Quote Link to post

No offence meant Wilf but,....If that comment is anything to go by then you obviously know very little about dogs!....Perhaps you made the comment without thinking... ....or perhaps you've only had thick dogs! In answerer to anonymous's question, same as you I keep a dog for life. Had one pts at 22 months due to a serious injury. Meg' my latest lurcher will be five on Monday and she knows what a gun does just as much as she knows what a needle does , pick up the lamp and she's up and ready just like she is when she hears the knokka box as I check my gear in the kitchen prior to an outing. I wonder how many parents would like to pass on their fecking kids when they don't make the grade?...It's not always the chavvies fault!....Bring back the birch and the fecking stocks! Careful selection should overcome 99% of the problem imo. Fair to say we all make mistakes now and again but in general with the right training and nurturing most dogs will come good. Army selection is a prime example. Bunch of sixteen year old kids apply to join up, careful selection by experienced people should ensure that only suitable candidates are chosen and with the right training they go on to be hero's......just my opinion! artic 595
If a car fails its MOT each year, the car would go! So if my dogs fail, which i have been lucky and have NOT then it will be out of my kennels. Yes i will spend £££ on treatment, but if the dog is not performing in the field i will not feed a dog just for its looks and for people to say "Nice dog mate" Brought off true working parents to WORK. Yes some pups from working parents do become failures big time!!! Have no time for failures, im committed to my dogs i expect them to be too in the field!
