Brimmer 220
Decided it was time to take out the jills. Took two experienced jills out, alongside two hobs (just for back up) today. I normally work hobs all the time, but thought it a bit cruel to not let them in on the work occasionally! Right from the word go, the normally peacefull boxing up of the hobs, turned into a circus with the jills instantly scrapping and squealing in the confined space of one of the carry boxes. I split the tempramental little critters up, so 1 hob, and 1 jill in each of the two boxes. Changing nothing at all, the squealing and carrying on continued. I waited for the old feller to pick me up outside my house, whilst this was going on, whilst paperboy walked past wondering what the hell was going on! Got there, (still squealing and carrying on) and had to make a new hole in the leather of the mark 1 collar, to fit the collar secure without strangling the jill. On the first warren, around 8 holes i netted up. (Don't normally have to with the hobs) Then put her in. Bolted one sharpish, then started the messing about. These are decent jill's allthough a little out of praccy, still do pretty good, but reminded me of why I rarely use them. They struggle to shift the rabbits that wont come out. Fair play, she stuck with it in the end, but a lot of messing about! Enough of this, time for backup, in went one of the hobs, and instantly, got things flying out, or stopping them up. No messing from the hob! This carried on all morning, to the point when i said enough was enough, and only worked the hob. Then the fog dropped in! Time for dinner, and a good few bunnies in the bag. A change of ferrets, one hob one jill, in the afternoon, pretty much the same. Jill trying but just not up to it, and putting the hob in to clear things up properly. Only had an hour after dinner to be honest, the fog dropped in thick, so called it a day, only getting 6 more in the short afternoon session. I now know what i'm keeping when get rid of some ferrets soon. Hob's only from now on! Quote Link to post

andy s410c 61
I've always preferred to work jills & i've only had 2 that were just not into the rough & tumble of rabbitting. One of mine stuck at it today, the rabbit was nearly dead as it fell into the net,it did'nt even purse up properly it was that paggered But each to their own & you still had a decent day B,well done Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Jill's are great when you get a good un, only seen a handfull of good uns though! Wish i had a few good uns, anyone got any spare? Nobody would ever part with a good jill! Sometime's a bit of muscle is required to shift the bunnies, bring in the hobs! (and the spade!) Sounds like my sort of critter andy! I like a good jill, don't get me wrong, but a lot of the time the bucks just say no. We got to the point a lot of years ago, to have big killing machine's. Most of the time we don't even net up. Drop them in, and follow them up. Some rabbits bolt, the dogs get them. (unless it's on real tricky ground, then the nets are set.) The others, well, they just get sorted. Most of the holes are not deep, maybee 18- 36", so we don't wast time setting 12 nets for 1 rabbit to bolt, just turn over the sod, and out they come. If i worked an area with deep warrens, then i'd have to rethink things a little. Quote Link to post

Got a decent stack going at the moment myself, so plenty of grafters to go at. If you get short yourself, give me a shout. Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Interesting way of doing it Brimmer. I suppose if its all shallow digs, then why not, seems to work for you anyhow.. I think woodga on here just uses hobs aswell. Frank. We will still use nets in tricky areas, and longnets on big open warrens, but mostly it's 3 -12 holers, and a couple of bunny's at most. It's pretty shallow most of the time, so a quick flash with the spade and it's done. It also gets the dogs a bit keener on marking up if they get a run for there troubles of marking up. Came unstuck on this one though! How not to do it! Idiot with a spade alert! Quote Link to post
